I'd say the Junior TT world's gold medal is killing it.
He'll be considered the "good genes kid", but I expect making the Pro Tour will be a cakewalk if he's committed.

I realize its pretty early to ask these questions, but can a 6'5"-6" rider be a world beater in the Lemond/Armstrong/Indurain sense of the word? Or is a place like the track and TTs his future?

Racing for 18 months now, world junior champ and national IP champ, thats just amazing.

Indurain was 6'3", so he's not a point completely off the curve. It will be interesting if he makes it to the top of the sport, to see what kinds of developments come along to support tall riders at that technical level.

Who knows what kind of rider he'll develop into, but he's got the dream team for momma and poppa. I'll bet he won't grow any shorter though

I can't wait for July when I can finally race against him. The numbers I have right now are completely useless because of the track materials, altitude, wind, etc.

Indutrain's performance was unremarkable until the EPO era started. It wasn't until 1990, his 6th tour that he showed winning form and his first win was 1991.

• 1985: Withdrew, 4th stage
• 1986: Withdrew, 8th stage
• 1987: 97th
• 1988: 47th
• 1989: 17th
• 1990: 10th
• 1991: 1st

How many Tour champs did NOT show their potential in the first year or two? Pantani was 3rd his first year. Lemond was 3rd his first year. Ullrich was 2nd his first year. Basso was 11th his first year. Roche was 3rd his 3rd year. Hampsten was 4th his first year.

Lance? DNF 1993. Won stage 8, which is great though.

Regarding Indurain, yeah, it's pretty lame when a 21-year-old 6'3" goon can't finish the Tour.

Lance won a stage in his 1st and dropped out intentionally; won a stage in his 2nd; dropped out of his 3rd and was diagnosed with cancer; won his 4th.

btw, I believe 6'3" Axel Merckx was 10th in his first Tour (1998).

My point is that there are a lot more variables than just when a guy started winning Tours. EPO wasn't just used by the race winners. Indurain was riding for a proven leader, and you would have to look at each season as a whole from a training, peak, and health, and a team dynamic perspective.

The only Tour champ in your list that even compares to Indurain is LeMond, and everyone knows that he was a special kind of badass who probably could have won 7 or 8 Tours given good health. Everyone else in the list, given their relatively limited success being so early, maybe should have waited a couple years to start tearing it up.

There's no correlation between early Tour success and eventual Tour ownership.

The kid is world junior TT champ. Thats impressive, and he is obviously classy, but I'm gonna rain on the parade here.

A 4.35 to 4.38 4000m is not that impressive. Dean Woods was riding that quick in 1984/85 as a 17 and 18 year old outdoor with no disk wheel or tri-bars. 4.35 wouldn't even qualify him for the Australian track endurance squad (qualifier is a 3.21 3000m IIRC). Most years a 4.35 wouldn't even win you a NSW, Victorian or South Australian state title.

So get a grip you lot.

Considering he's only 17, not riding a Lotus Superbike and only been on the track for a month I think he's in good shape.

fair enough, he's only 17, but I wouldn't add "only been on the track for a month", coz it's no big deal. There's not much skill required for a pursuit -- all he's got do is get used to the fixed gear. It's not like he's doing a Keirin against 6 of the biggest blokes in the world.
I think LeMond won a similar title on his first ever shot on a track, and Rominger totally smashed the World Hour Record after only a few shots on a fixie

You can ignore most of those, and just find times from the same person at the two tracks you want to compare and figure the percentage difference.

It doesn't matter-- he beat Brad Huff, and Brad is scary strong (Bronze in the Omnium at worlds).
