Campy Record 8 speed shifter substitution....
I have a 95 Pinarello with a bad Campy Record 8 speed shifter (right) and I am looking for a replacement. Can I use Athena or another less expensive shifter to replace it. Not worried about aesthetics, just function.
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can--Campy 8 is Campy 8. The internal parts on all Ergopower shifters of the same number of speeds are 90% identical. You will feel a slightly greater amount of effort in shifting since Athena/Veloce/Mirage shifters, the main axle inside them goes through a bronze bushing instead of a pair of cartridge bearings.

Before you replace it, consider rebuilding it. It'very satisfying. I can't speak to 8 speed but I have rebuilt a lot of 10 speed rear shifters with broken spring carriers, the earliest 10-speed ones had cheap cast alloy carriers which could be replaced with a later composite carrier or just buy a bag of them (cheap) and replace as necessary.
