Hmm... It would take a lot of proving in the market to get me to jump on a plastic bike. The landing of 10-15' of air is about the last place I want a head tube area giving out. Eating my own handlebars and fork isn't the kind of thing I have to try to know I won't like it.

Which market exactly? Aircraft? F1 race cars? Baseball bats? All proven.

Trek came out with the first OCLV eighteen years ago - I'd say that's a pretty good run. In the last 5 or so years there have been significant advances in both design capability and manufacturing processes. There is no logical reason to doubt the capability of carbon.

They make bats out of carbon? Didn't know that. In any case, the rest of those things mentioned are Intended to take repetitive abuse. A DJ frame is going to take hard hit after hit. No idea they made carbon bats. That makes me feel better about it.

In any case, why then do you always read stuff saying not to ride carbon after it's been crashed? Even manufacturer stuff has those types of warnings. You're a damn good DJer if you can manage to never have a hard wipe-out. Maybe the past few years have made significant enough improvements that crashing carbon repetitively isn't an issue? I don't keep up with it enough to know the more recent advancements. I'm still riding steel and aluminum even on my road bikes(I prefer the older style road bikes).

You can't compare a carbon road bike to a carbon DJ or downhill bike. The engineering is different. You wouldn't expect a lugged steel road bike to be able to take the hits a chromoly DJ takes, would you? Or an aluminum road bike to handle what an aluminum downhill bike takes? You wouldn't even expect an aluminum XC bike to handle what an aluminum downhill bike takes.

Front Wheel: Ditch Witch rim, black, true and straight with no name sealed bearing front hub I believe
Rear Wheel: chrome rim, true and straight, no scratches with 9t driver on no name sealed bearing hub
Tires: Maxxis Prototype semi-slick tires
Chain: KMC
Cranks: FSA Fatboy cranks, FSA BB
Seat and seatpost: MacNeil integrated seat and post for less weight

I bought it mostly just for the value of the parts, $60 for the frame, fork, wheels, bars, stem, & seat/post; & I still owe him $40 for the BB & crankset he went ahead & gave me. So $100 for a bike that needs brakes & nothing else. I'm still trying to figure out what material the frame is made of to see if it's worth using or if I should keep it as a spare, but I got it all assembled with the crankset now & it rides great! Gonna try to take it out to the local BMX track tomorrow.

Whoops, I accidentally deleted the part where I mentioned having already assembled the BB/crankset. It's an FSA BB (not sure the exact model) & FSA Fatboy crankset with bash guard included. And man did it baffle the hell out of my step-dad & me. I was given one more spacer than the BB needed & we spent 45 minutes trying to find creative ways to use it before discovering the correct assembly The bike is in the garage & it's dark, but here's the best pic I could snap (it's also upside down in a cramped spot):



PS - Ignore the clip-ons. The cages are on the MTB & the clip-ons were the most readily available for a late night test ride. (though I may put them back on if I decide to take up racing again next season.


EDIT: After looking closer this morning, it's an FSA Nasty Boy crankset.

Check this out. Hard to find a deal like this on the Sunline V1 All Mountain stem:

This was the Sunline guide that Jason Schippers designed when he was Product Manager for the bicycle division. Spring-loaded lower boomerang so that it wouldn't bend or rip you ISCG tabs off if you smacked something hard. Sunline produced a first run and then never went to market with it; still not sure why.

They blew out all their cycling stock to Backcountry.com/Chainlove/Huck'nRoll to be liquidated. In fact, HnR has Sunline bars, stems (as rat fink notes) etc. pretty cheap too. Sunline has shut down their cycling disvision; so if you want any Sunline components, better move quick.
