Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The only thing wrong with that picture is a pink jersey that doesn't represent GC at the Giro d'Italia.

How many of us would put on lycra and get on a bike if we knew that people would be gawking at us and maybe posting our pic on the internet to laugh at? I got mad respect for this dude.

It's amazing that we are supposed to feel bad about motivating unhealthy people to become healthy

What would be amazing is if you really believed that posting that picture is supposed to be motivating or constructive in any way.

+1million.

Shame is not going to motivate someone in that way. It is far more likely to cause them to withdraw into whatever issue is the root cause to begin with.

And please, don't insult the rest of us by claiming that posting a picture like that is some high minded goal of inspiring and motivating people. It was posted for people to laugh at.

This.

Think about it. It's like a bully posting pictures of a chubby girl in HS wearing workout clothes all over facebook, and then when people confront the bully he says he's just doing it as a service to motivate her to become healthy.

That wouldn't fly. Sure, fat older guys on bikes should have thicker skin to criticism than a 16 year old girl with body image problems, but don't pretend that posting pictures of them or reminding them directly that they're overweight is motivation to get healthy in any way.

I've never been overweight, but if I were and people in a particular sport constantly reminded me of that, then I'd probably quit that sport. That's the last thing we need if cycling is going to have a broader acceptance in this country.

I have a feeling this isn't going to end well. Maybe calling in Billy D. for a preemptive strike might be the way to go.

We've all become too sensitive in the United States. These attitudes are why ISIS is winning. Back when this was the greatest country in the world, we weren't afraid of hurting people's feelings.

I also guarantee the guy in the picture is in on the joke. We have all become gullible too

That's because people had more class than to ridicule. It's a 2-way street.

Yeah, let's go back to when women couldn't vote and people of color were considered property. You know, the good ole days, right?

It's called progress for Pete's sake. Move forward and evolve as a society, or get stuck in the crap that held them back.

Hey I'm not against hurt feelings (and BTW you don't seem so stoic yourself at the moment), it's more taking issues with the fact that a fat an unattractive man isn't a joke. It's just not funny, and this kind of shaming can be more damaging to some people than just hurt feelings.

Well we did it! We got to "we can't make fun of fat people and that's why ISIS is taking over the world" on the first page! Congratulations team!

Man, I feel it is in really poor taste to make fun of chubby people riding a bike. This guy is out there riding...that is all that matters.

I see people like this on charity rides or show up on the group rides and it makes me feel great knowing it is one less person sitting on the couch watching some terribly made television program.
