Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It is bamboo. I planted it all along the wall and that one is the only one that made it. Further south, and east, trees get bigger due to deep soil and considerably more rain. I guess I failed to mention that soil depth, in this immediate area, varies from negative(outcrops) to a foot or so. But it is quite variable. When they were digging the footers for the house, it averaged around that; sometimes less: rarely more. There was one corner where it went down a meter or so. The rule is you don't stop digging till you hit bedrock, when digging footers.
Edit: Abd our definition of soil is quite variable as well. When I go out to plant a tree I take the mattock for digging and a shovel for moving stuff around. At the end of the process I will have a bushel or more of loose stone to deal with. Some of it gets used to make a corral for the new planting, as a warning to the one operating the weed eater

You're only allowed 5 in a row, or was it 4? Regardless anyone who uses that many is clearly a call girl from a far off land

Late 90s Super V, mid 90s Trek 930, and turn-of-the-century HardRock all donated to a local org that fixes up bikes to give to foster kids at Christmastime.

One can find small pockets of bamboo here, very widely scattered. I wonder how they got there. Does it spread on its own, if left alone? Or do you have to plant each stock?

I have no idea what the soil depth is here.

Short Saturday ride. This club usually schedules only one ride and it's usually 40ish. Of course, it was high paced on the way out with a 15 mile gradual uphill and full gas on the way back which is when I got spit out the back after taking a too long pull. Had company, though, including a big guy who likes to pull. Front group waited at the end of that section so back to red-lining for a while.

I like riding with them, I just wish they would do more longer rides on Saturdays. Kinda burned out on the other club, mostly because of the routes.

Yeah, your moving time and elapsed time are visible (along with elevation gain, calorie estimate, average speed, max speed, etc). No device listed for you, though.

No bike today because saving up for zwift hub.

But I thought it was mid morning, and not so bad, so I did like 50 swings of the 7 iron and came in astonished at how hot it is.

I looked and it's actually ~2pm here and already 107 'merica (feels like 113). Sheesh.

And just now some really young hawk slammed into my the porch windows. It flew away kinda limping along. It had a yellow beak, dark grey with white flecks on its body. I wonder what species it was, and I hope it recovers. And has learned it's lesson.

Does Vandy ever win?

Recommended youtube cinema of the day. Brainsmasher: a Love Story. I rode by the set while they were doing the exterior scene starting at 12:29. I was on a slight downhill flying around 20mph, so not sure if film cameras were able to capture that kind of blinding speed.

The interior shots there are the Roseland Theater where I saw such legends as Slayer, Toots and the Maytals, Skinny Puppy, etc.

Probably a juvenile red tailed hawk, given how common those are round here. It's tail wasn't red, nor it's body, but I guess some are just darker. Not sure yellow on the beak is common with those, tho.

Yeah I barely survived a stroll around downtown Peoria this morning. Noon now, so I'm gonna stay indoors 'til sundown.
