It actually works pretty well, up to a point. For what I've been doing at this point in the year -- tempo and some sub-threshold intervals -- the numbers seem to match up pretty closely at a given heart rate with my tested wattage numbers, which are of course also taken indoors and may be slightly off (I don't own a PowerTap or SRM to compare it to real-world experience).

Basically, that Pez review seems on the money given my experience; the displayed wattages seem a bit off if you get out of the saddle and really hammer, but they're very predictable in the range of wattages put out by a typical amateur cyclist. So it seems very useful for interval work so long as you're not putting out 400+ watts at LT which I would doubt any of us are. Perhaps not so good for maximal efforts, sprint intervals, that kind of thing.

Since it's a wired computer that I didn't feel like leaving on a bike all the time, I modified mine a bit with some velcro pump straps for easier on-off. It also makes for much easier swapping between my track and road bikes.

heck, that review has gotten me interested in the tacx i-magic setup. i just got a computer for travel, and it sits in the closet when i'm home; why not hook it up to the tacx and watch some cool stuff? i can't force myself to sit on the bike longer than about 45 minutes in the basement. i stare at the walls or a movie or something, and get bored as all get-out. maybe this thing will be interesting enough to actually get a normal-length workout

I got the computer thrown in for free when I ordered my Kinetic from one of the online dealers; I believe it was Bike Tires Direct.

I purchased one at the LBS and it works great. Its a little cheap on the buttons. Sometimes you have to tap it more than once. According to the shop mechanic they did a test with a power tap and there was only a 6 watt diffence between the two. Not bad.
