Yeah, yesterday's ride was a little hot, dry, and smokey. But since I'd been travelling for business and hadn't ridden since the 20th, it was still pretty damn good!

It stopped just shy of 100°F week ago yesterday where I am, after several days just before as well as earlier in August above 90°F for the daily high. About 2" TOTAL rainfall since Fathers Day in June, maybe 1-1/2" since Mothers Day the month prior. That's about 12 - 13" below normal for this region, we're in a "severe drought" condition according to the NWS:

It's been pleasant enough for the season since last weekend, getting some things done outside that weren't possible with the higher temps earlier. Forecast - no mention of rain - has us looking at 92 Saturday, 96 Sunday, 95 on Labor Day, then a slow drop over the next three days to something more like what September historically brings to this region.
Literally nobody I've talked to who's lived here longer than me (be nine years the end of this month) can recall a drier year than this one. Farmers are telling me they're paying three to five times what they used to buy hay for their livestock (this is beef and dairy country) than in prior years because the dry weather has made hay yields less than 15% what they've been in previous years.
Hotter years? Yes, but there's always been rain from time to time, enough to keep things rooted to the earth alive. I'm watering the three trees in my yard monthly just to help them survive the coming winter months. I won't water my lawn. The costs for water from the city service to my thinking are a small enough fraction of what it would cost me to have even one of the two largest trees removed if one or both don't survive this prolonged drought.

Okay, today was just about perfect here in the East Bay. Upper 60s with a gentle breeze on the Berkeley side of the hills, mid to upper 70s with the hint of a breeze on the Orinda side of the hills.
My complaint? Winter is coming and it is going to get colder. Not Minnesota cold, but cold enough so that I actually have to think about and plan how many layers to wear. Harumph.

I rode my usual circuit today. Rain started around noon, in the middle of my ride. That's fine with me, I had put on my jacket and phone in the bag in the pocket and it was a lovely ride. Trails were mostly empty, some annoying teenagers at Walden Park but no big deal. Is this a thing to push a (newer) iphone into some ones face? That's what I got when going out of the restroom to get my bike off the rack. I won't let this crap bring me down, it's a beautiful day and great riding on mostly empty trails.

Nothing like a cold, wet butt to kill my sense of adventure. I'm too old for that ****.So, I came home, got into some dry kit, and rode 33 "miles" ITG.(In The Garage) in addition to 10.6 IRL. That'll have to do.

Despite being frosty the last several mornings in my neck of the woods, it's been quite pleasant during the day so I was able to get my usual 23 mile loop in out towards the coast and back. Rain is coming next weekend though, as is knee surgery. Won't be riding again until late December.

This morning after about half an inch of rain overnight the temperature was about 61F. After fiddling around this morning I was out on the road at about 10 am. Wearing my leg warmers. Very nice riding. Few people on the trails maybe only serious types (me). There were a couple menacing dark clouds out but no rain. I am not complaining about the weather. I am loving it.

You should have gone out yesterday. In the morning riding was great, after my noon break it was a little misty on the way home but quite nice all around. Not anything good today though I am just hunkered down at home, Maybe better tomorrow though.
