Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are the ramifications of buying really old Clif Shot Bloks?

I bought several boxes of Clif Shot Bloks from Nashbar for what I thought to be an excellent price. I now discovered (via the barfing thread) that these things have an expiration date. Are there performance draw backs to obselete bloks, and what sort of depreciation should I have received?

If you put them out in the hot sun for a few hours they should be OK.

They get a little tough over time, but I've never had any issues with them.

As long as you don't consider this a performance drawback you should be ok.

A guy in my club mentioned he had to throw out a whole box of energy bars because they were old. Someone asked how old . A couple of days past the "best buy" date.
Good thing, he'd likely have died from those.

I once ate a Vanilla Bean Gu pack that was a full 8 years past its expiration date. It was really very bad.

...when i was a boy, we would have been happy to have any shot bloks at all, expired or not. We had to make do with grabbing bugs on the fly and eating them.

Easier to just ride thru a cloud of those little gnats. No need to worry about expiration dates. They stop flying when they're not fresh.

Luxury.
When I were a lad we'd have to wake up at three o'clock in the morning, ride 150 miles to the coal mill and then scrape bugs off the ground that the miners had trodden on, eat them, and then ride back home where our dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

Thanks for taking that sidetrack down a bleak path full of child abuse.

The only recompense is that you included a triple century in 1 day by a child. I would be king if I could, myself, do that.

OP here. So I have reviewed my remaining balance of shot bloks, and where I understand the "best before, non-toxic after" approach, the data I discovered is disturbing for several reasons:

1). The sell by date is listed as "17AUG15". Is the year the first # or the last? The " 06SEP15" ones have me nervous.

B. How do they know to the damn day? That level of specificity indicates an exact service life.

I've never had any problems with expired energy stuff. Those were the best cause they were free! It's not like there is real food in them.
