Sprocket App - A new catalog tool for mechanics !
Heya folks!
I started repairing, modifying and building my own bicycles after visiting bikeforums.net years ago. It eventually grew into a full-time hobby of building up vintage road bikes and getting my friends started in cycling. I found it difficult to identify bikes and figure out what standards they followed and what parts were and were not compatible. I decided to do something about it, so I started building a mobile bike catalog app of everything thats ever been made. I call it Sprocket.
Happy to say we just shipped a new build on Android that adds Instagram-linked images and Sharing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...sprocket&hl=en
What can you already use Sprocket for?
• Get key standards for your frames; drivetrain, headset, bottom bracket, wheels, etc.
• Know what parts to buy and not to buy when upgrading and repairing
• Restore an all original build by analyzing what parts came stock
• Show your bicycle page to your LBS mechanic to help them help you quicker
• Explore what models were built by which companies, by year
• Compare frame materials and material quality between different models
• Figure out what parts and part groups were on which rides
• Identify year of production by looking at parts included on a model by year
• Showing off your bike vanilla style vs. detailed specs.
Now instead of just saying that I have a 1995 LeMond Maillot Jaune (Trek 5000 OCLV) and a 1984 Trek 460 I can provide a link from inside the app and Android users can see exactly what I mean, down to the frame tubing.
Heres my carbon fiber LeMond

And heres my low-tier but sturdy Trek 460

A big thanks to the community on here for inspiring me to build this. Please check out Sprocket and tell me what you want to see next, because Im building this tool for you. + Get more people to see the work im doing by rating the app on Google Play. My ultimate goal with this project is to make cycling mainstream in the United States by making bike repair, maintenance and upgrading an activity that is much easier and more accessible. Note: Yes, we are working on an iOS app. I have cyclists asking me for it at every Bay Area bike party lol

I also put on a daily bicycle component photo-blog at https://instagram.com/sprocketblog/

For free? That looks awesome! I don't have a smartphone but if I did I would install it immediately!
I'd love to read about how you put it together, did you blog it anywhere? Particularly, how complete is the database, how did you get it that complete (33K bikes!), and is there a means for users to contribute data for whatever didn't make it?
Also, I can guarantee you don't have my bike in it, because I built my CrossCheck frame-up from random eBay parts. If I had that app, I'd want the ability to create a (personal/private/shareable?) custom bike entry for a bike I have built or am planning to build. Maybe an idea for an upgraded version if you don't do that already?

We have proprietary scraping tools and data entry tools were developing and improving. I do need more human help entering old bikes manually. PM me if interested

~33,000 bikes across ~80 brands
There are holes and incomplete brands for many of these atm and I am working through that as fast as I can. Due to feedback I am focusing my attention on major older brands between the 70s-90s atm.

I really like the concept of this application and I loaded it on my Galaxy S6. Here are a few comments based on my initial impression.
1. Initialization takes way too long. I watched the spinning progress icon for 3+ minutes and whatever was going on still hadn't completed. Went for coffee so I'm not sure how long it ended up taking.
2. Could you allow one to start with some very broad filters such as bike type (road, MTB, cross, hybrid, BMX...)?
3. Records sometimes take a long time to retrieve.
4. Agree with the need for user defined bikes either starting from nothing or modding an existing bike entry and saving it as a modded bike.
5. Also agree with need for user submitted stock bikes.
Keep up the good work. I'd be interested in any updates.

Thank you! Rate us. It will help make it visible to more cyclists
Thank you!
Are you on 1.3.2 from Google Play? We had a hacky way I coded it the Instagram feed fixed in the latest release.
Yes, were working on that.
This is on the bike page? I am sure we can optimize this further.
We have this planned for next year due to several requests.
This is going to be a core part of what this application does, although it is not straight forward to figure out how to validate if a user-submitted bike is accurate vs. maliciously wrong.
Thanks again. Rate Sprocket in Google Play and follow the Sprocket Blog on Instagram
