Hi guys, I am new to the forum and just started biking to school and love it, it is at the top of a mighty hill.

My first experience riding was with a vintage Peugeot Monaco, but I think I want to get a more modern bike now since I am making an effort to bike to school consistently.

What are your thoughts and price suggestions for a LeMond Etape Triple 2007? A seller on craigslist is asking for 350. Is that a good bike? What is a good price for it? Should I ask for lower, if so how much, $300?

What are your guys thoughts on blue book for bike values?

I also have a chance of getting a Scattante R330 2011. How good is this bike? What should I be looking at when comparing these 2 bikes?

In my opinion 350 is waaaay too much for that LeMond. That Blue Book price is probably a lot closer to its real value. I'm not sure you're going to be able to talk the seller down to that without insulting him though. I would look at the newer bike more seriously anyway, but that's just me. How much for the Scattante?

The blue book is typically low on valuation. The rule of thumb tends to be half new which is what the S is asking for the Lemond; that said I think the price is high on that. A lot depends on the condition of the bike and parts which we know nothing about.

More to the point is that your best bet for a commuter bike? You may want something that can take a bit fatter tire and fenders for a commuter.

I don't think aluminum Lemonds have much value. And with nearly 10 year old entry level components I think $200 might be fair depending on the local market

Assuming that both bikes fit you and are in good condition, respective to their age, I would go with the Scattante. It is newer and has better components. I also think that the $300 is way too much for the LeMond regardless of the condition. They are both pretty good bikes but it all comes down to do the fit you and at what price.

That would be about $250 now, or $300 in the summer around here (max, if in good shape). But this is a pretty hot bike market. How much is the r330?

Wow, thank you everyone for your advice, I really appreciate it! The R330 seller was asking for 150 last night and people were contacting him, but I couldnt go out too late (gotta have my daily evening long distance phone call with my girlfriend), so I offered 175 for him to hold it for me in case the forum decided the scattante was better than the LeMond. I guess I'll jump on the deal now, thanks everyone!

Curious, I dont know how to compare bikes or what to look out for. I looked at some "how to buy used bike" tutorials. What was your thought process? What makes a bike "better"? I couldn't find specs on the Scattante 2011, do specs change a lot from year to year?

+1. I have a theory that Performance asked some Italian cyclist for a cool name for their house-brand bikes...and his response was something like "that crap?" ("Scattante?").


...but a few of their offerings are pretty decent for the price. This one seems like a slam dunk.

Given your commute, consider the gearing on the bike. Was the Peugeot a typical 42-28 low gear? What does the Scattante have as its lowest gear combination?

I have a couple older Peugeots and they are very nice bikes, but I lowered the gearing substantially for the Seattle hills. I may be slow but I can climb just about anything on the Peugeots.

I built up a bike with the Scattante XLR frameset about 12 years ago. It looks like pretty much the same frame, although back in 2004 it was 7005 aluminum made in Taiwan. It's a great frame and I still use it as my bad weather bike and on the trainer.

The steel bikes and the spine bikes are quite desirable. The aluminum bikes not so much.

I don't get notifications when people reply in a thread I subscribe to, how can i fix that? I already changed my settings in Default Thread Subscription Mode: Instantly using Email, and my spam settings for Bike Forum are fine, but nothing works. Am i missing something?
