One of these days, I'll do a photo journal of bikes locked on the streets of Manhattan. I grew up there, and it was always a bike city, but it's really exploded now. And almost every bike makes a statement somehow.

When it's nice out....
when it's not
I switch the lights back and forth. I'm planning on putting a new saddle and slick tires onto the trek, and am considering getting some albatross style bars to replace the flat bar. I also might swap the cassette out for something that makes more sense for road riding.

Is this a 1 or 2? MY LBS only carries Giants so I wondered about the Roam for commuting/long distance riding. How do you like it?
Edit: I answered my own question; the disc brakes tell me. Question still stands.

It's been a while - I have been busy with other things, and took a bit of a sabbatical from the forums.
I've been busy, though. I built a new wheel for the Marinoni around an Alfine 8 hub (that I had in the parts bin), and the result is phenomenal. I've been enjoying it thoroughly, though I will be selling the bike soon - I'm consolidating to one bike, and will be building up a Singular Gryphon in the coming weeks. I've sold the Norco Vesta - the geometry was just not quite right for me.
Anyway, here's the Marinoni in commuter guise:

....and on a completely different note, I've obtained my son's permission to use his 29er mountain bike as my primary commuter so I can properly clean and package the Marinoni for sale, and in the interim until I build the Gryphon (frames due stateside in October).
I've made some temporary alterations to his bike (mainly from my commuter parts bin), and it is an absolute blast to ride.
- Jeff Jones "Loop" H-bar
- Schwalbe Big Apple 2.35 tires
- rack, dynamo front wheel, lights
- venerable Brooks saddle
- lockout on suspension fork (0 travel)
The bike is super fun to ride, and I'm finding the big apples to roll surprisingly well. I am averaging similar speeds as I do on the Marinoni, with much less anxiety about road conditions.
So, here's the monster:

The E3 is my "see" light, and the PB Blaze 2W (must be what you are referring to) is always on blink mode ("be seen"). I run both lights night or day.
I have a similar setup on back, with the E3 triple LED tail light on steady and a PB SF or Radbot 1000 on blink.
The "steady" lights might be fine on their own at night, but the blinkies are a necessity during the day.

The dynamo hub is the Shimano Alfine. The drag is not noticeable when riding.

So far the tires have been fine. Only downside is they are fairly heavy. I haven't logged enough miles to comment on their flat resistance but they seem like they will hold up pretty well.

Thank you. That is kind of a crappy cell phone pic but in real life it's pretty amazing. I've been paranoid about locking it up because I don't want any nicks in the paint (but right now my hands are tied because my other two bikes need some work that I haven't gotten around to doing... one has a wheelset that's totally worn out, another has a broken spoke that I need to fix).

One way you could protect the frame when locking it up is go buy some insulating pipe pipe foam from a hardware store. Cut off a piece just long enough to stick it some where on you main frame when you lock it up where you need ot lean it against something that might scratch it. I did this for a while with my mini velo before I stopped being paranoid about the scratches. =P Of course in general I am pretty careful about how I lock up all my bikes even the old beat up Trek I used to use.

Some really cool machines, thanks for the photos. One observation, not universal, but common, I think some folks have never heard of minimum insertion for stems and seat posts, lol, .

Still waiting on my rear rack, front light, and waterproof panniers (all from Nashbar). I recently put reflective tape on my bike that will become my commuter on Tuesday, so I can be seen.
