I think I am definitely going to get a cape of some sort - and the Duxback is one of the more tempting options. But I am still undecided. It seems that there are actually quite a few options out there.

So while I am trying to decide what I want, I will list all the options I can find here - in case anyone else comes looking.

There are cheap, unbranded ones (available on eBay mostly, but elsewhere as well), but I have made one decision and that is to avoid them. I just don't trust the durability of them.

So, on my consider list are:

John Boultbee Brooks Oxford Rain Roll Up Cape
Very expensive - £230 GBP on their site !!!
Waterproof cotton, JP Raver Tweed (worsted wool and reflective threads) and leather.
4 sizes (S, M, L, XL)
1 colour - black

John Boultbee Brooks Cambridge Stowable Rain Cape
Slightly cheaper - £130 GBP on their site.
Waterproof nylon
3 sizes (1, 2, 3)
3 colours (brown, sand, black)

Water Off A Duck's Back Cycle Cape
Moderately priced - £69 GBP on their site
PU coated microfibre - claims waterproof AND breathable
Detachable hood
1 size
3 colours (Bright Red, Dover Grey (both with Pale Blue lining))

Carradice Duxback Rain Poncho
Moderately priced - £75/£80 GBP on their site
Reproofable waxed cotton
Helmet Cover, Spats and Overshoes also available
2 sizes (Standard, Super)
1 colour (green)

Carradice Pro-route Cycle Cape
Reasonable priced - £30 on their site.
Polyester
Helmet Cover and Spats also available
1 size (fits most)
1 colour (Hi Viz Neon Yellow (to EN471 standard))

Grunden's Bike Poncho
Moderately priced - $122 USD on Riv Bike
Synthetic - Heavy Duty
2 sizes (M, L)
1 colour (Hi Viz Custard Yellow)

Cleverhood Rain Cape
Expensive - $239 USD on their site
Breathable Membrane Fabric
1 size (fits most)
8 colours (Electric Houndstooth, Ocean State Blue, Seabee Yellow, Weetamoe Camo, John Brown, TF Green, Coffee Milk, Mr Fox Point)

If there are any others that spring to mind, feel free to suggest them.

this is what I use , the heavy coating is on the outside , seams welded .
the nylon backing fabric is on the inside .

typically the other way, the coating is on the inside face..

When I start at 5 I get up at 0315 and have breakfast and get changed and go, my 15 mile journey is just under an hour so I have 45 mins to eat and get changed at each end and in case of mechanical problems, after a couple of days I'm up before the alarm. My uniform is either in my kriega rucksack or in my locker at work. My rain gear currently consists of a madison jacket £60 and even with vents and front zip and cuffs open it still sweats, altura shoe covers, and waterproof gloves. The rest of the stuff I wear ends up soaking when I arrive at work whether its raining or not so why bother covering it? I have some cheap overtrousers that came as part of my uniform issue for when it gets colder but its more about insulation than keeping the rain off!! Get your routine right and you'll be fine. Maybe try going to bed earlier? All the cycling should tire you out enough to sleep properly
Agreed - I'd rather be drenched with fresh rain from the outside than with my own smelly sweat from the inside. My commute is a little under an hour with about 250-350m total ascent each way; as I'm competing with myself for times, I'm always going to be sweaty when I arrive. So, I've opted (for now at least) to forego the rain gear and look at spending my money instead on lights that make me more visible to drivers and on tires that give me good traction.

I'm lucky though - have a shower at work, so just leave a set of toiletries there and put a change of clothes in my panniers.

Although as I found out yesterday when I forgot my overshoes. The overshoes are a definite must, my feet were swimming in my shoes without them!! No rain jacket wasn't an issue but the shoes did me in

Just good waterproof panniers for change of clothes. And a good wind-jacket, to keep chest from strong wind.

Apart from that - get soaked, change, let clothes dry for the way back. I'd say best bicycle rain gear is one that dries quickly, not the one that repels rain, since I sweat when riding anyway.
