Viva Bike Vegas

Here's the first decent shot of our new Co-Motion Speedster. Taken during yesterday's (10/5) Low Key Hill Climb up Montebello Road in Cupertino, CA. We were pretty happy with the way it climbed (5.3 miles, 1940', 39:49). It's got couplers and 40-spoke Dyad wheels with 28mm Gatorskins so it's not like we went out of our way to minimize its weight! Sure climbs better than some lesser bikes that we tried, though.

At the finish of the Texas Time Trials - This event is a serious RAAM qualifier but since 500 miles nonstop is not our idea of fun, we rode the not so serious 26.5 mile "Sprint" event.

We rode both yesterday and today....notice the snow in the background. We were living in a blizzard Thursday and Friday last week. Got out Sunday...temperature was 54 and went out again today..temperature 61! Roads were dry enough for the most part, but did spin out on a take off on a hill with wet racing tires. Tuesday...out again for 25 miles. Roads were drier. We enjoy each other so much when we ride! Since we live in such a remote area, we seem to be the only tandemers riding here. Sure get a lot of thumbs up and happy waves...very rarely the one finger wave!

Here's our pic from Low Key Hill Climb, Montebello.
If you look closely at the original you can see that when I retreived the bike from the car just before the race and mounted the front wheel I inexcusably neglected to re-engage the front brake caliper. Since this was a hill climb, I did not use and detect that the front brake wasn't working.
While descending, the carbon arm on our TRP Spyre rear disc cracked.
And thus at this point, at 18 mph, I found that the rear brake wasn't working, and then neither was the front!
Making like Fred Flinstone, I managed to slow us down by dragging my cleats on the ground, and eventually come to a near stop, so that we leaned into the grassy hillside beside us around that curve, and everything came out all right. Mrs Ritter was shaken by this experience, but was soon intent on getting back to the car so she could keep her lunch date our son. We have also had discussions about her anxious habit of clipping out unnecessarily.
The next day was Mrs. Ritter's birthday, which she was grateful to see. For her card, I commemorated our experience:

You two look awesome! This looks like fun. The snow here is nearly melted away, but more is on the way in a few days. We had a 12 mile ride yesterday. Time was too short! It's raining today with big wind, but tomorrow and Sunday look good for a ride. Have fun, and ride on!

Braking Insurance
@ Ritterview,
A similar thing happened we we descended Mnt Diablo the first time. The front brake failed and there was not enough brake in the back to stop the bike. I have since taken to have multiple brakes. I run disks and V brakes on the triple without a drum brake for insurance. They make a splitter which works out real well. It's nice insurance when you are going down hill over 40 mph.

Our 9 year old with me at CycLOUvia last week here in Louisville. This was our second trip up/down Bardstown Rd (which is shut down to cars for 4 hours for the event), the first was on our old JCPenney tandem. We got around 16 miles in for the day.
Notice her bear on the rack facing everyone we pass. We got a lot of comments from that, it looked hilarious from behind us.

On our new (well, 4 months from new) full-suspension MSC tandem, participating in www.mh2d.nl last September and riding in the French Vosgues in July. The MSC Zion tandem is a relatively affordable machine with a full 15 cm of suspension travel at the back. Since my wife & stoker had an accident in 2010 from which some lower-back issues remain, the rear suspension is awesome! As a captain I like it too because the rear end tends to move up and down less than our previous Santos hardtail. On the other hand, straight line stability is a tad less, probably due to the rear suspension. But that's something one gets used to very quickly.

Had a beautiful weekend in the midwest and was able to get out both days. We are getting close to the end of our first year on the tandem and we have both really enjoyed riding together. Hoping for lots of nice days over the winter months.

We juiced our bike up a little bit (well, you can leave the little out ..... :-) ) mainly to tickle our own fancy. So with Hope V4 brakes (instead of Magura MT2), Hope ProII/Arch EX wheels (instead of MSC Freeride wheels) and a Fox 36 Talas fork (instead of RS Domain) this bike did not get lighter but even better. We also replaced the independent freewheeling 170/170 crankset (yuk!) with a Middleburn 175/170 set. To top this set off, it has integrated spiders/sprockets on the timing chain. Nice!
