Gave up my car in January and started commuting the 2.5 miles to work everyday. So far I'm down 10 kilos in weight. Still have 10 kilos to go before I'm officially not a fatty.
This is my daily commuter/beater. £30 off ebay. Spent £50 on Schwalbe City Jet tires and an Axiom rear rack plus a day servicing. I do everything on this bike, shop, see friends, work, etc.
I got myself another bike for backup too:

I've only owned the bike for a couple weeks, but so far I really like it. My only gripe is the limited gearing options, but I expect that to change as more belt drive bikes come to market. But even at the stock gearing, it is perfect for my daily 9mi commute. The belt drive IS indeed very quiet, and coupled with the IGH there are no loud clangs or clicks when shifting. There is also the other "quiet" which is the reduced vibration in the drive train. Instead of feeling the chain links and teeth on a normal bike, there is no vibration through the belt drive. So far, so good...we'll see how she does through this year. I plan to write a long review at 500 miles when I've really settled into the bike, and then again at 2,000 miles.

My first proper commuter/ my first singlespeed. Early 90's Mongoose Iboc Sport built up as a singlespeed commuter with a mix of cheap new parts and bits I had lying in the spares bin. Cheap enough not to shed many tears if it is stolen (also way to large, though some how feels right), but it is still a fun ride.
Next changes are going to be multi position bar's and the shortest stem I can find.

I am considering a very similar setup but the frames I can find here locally usually have vertical dropouts. Do you have horizontal dropouts, or how did you manage the chain tension? Which years model is your frame?
I am very interested in knowing more about the SS conversion also, like which rear hub, crankset etc, please inform us

The drivetrain components are mostly stock:
-Exage 300lx cranks, with the Salsa ring attached with singlespeed bolts -LX Brakes -Exage 500LX hubs.
Plus some bits from my spares bin:-Sunringle ZUZU pedals -WTB Slickasaurus -Terrible Koski seat -Blackburn EX-1 -Jannd Panniers and seat bag
And a few new items:-SKS commuter fenders -Nashbar front rack -Continental Touring tubes
I bought the bike disassembled but with all of its original pieces for $25, so all in all I have only invested about $100. This is my first singlespeed, and so far I'm finding it to be really enjoyable(though it has taken me almost two weeks to stop reaching for the non-existent shifters).

I posted my Trek 8500 about a week ago. Here's my other ride:
'99 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC Comp
I call this my Cadillac. It is super smooth on pavement.
Just upgraded the rear derailleur and shifters to SRAM X9. I installed the Specialized Crossroads Armadillo tires last week. Went for my first ride with them today. I REALLY like them.
I also have a Topeak QR rack with the Topeak trunk bag that I can switch between both bikes.
On the shelf waiting to be installed:
Topeak barXtender
Topeak Fixer 3 handlebar bag mount

I need to take a fancy pic.
'86 Trek 760 Pro Series. Fallen from grace and becoming a lowly commuter.

I know that my first post should probably be in the introductions, but I thought it more relevant here, as this was the thread that brought me to this site. I've been lurking, reading and learning from all of you for a while, and I think it's finally time to put my work in progress up here for you to see. It's in the beginning stages, but I personally think it's coming along nicely.
09 Giant Cypress. The mechanics are stock but I've added the Scott speed saddle, flat bar, bar ends (the fat part is my old ergo grips, I put them on backward and they make for an almost hood like grip) a Sunlite HD touring rack, Sunlite polycarbonate fenders, Serfas Tuono 700x32 tires, giant toe clips and alloy pedals, bottle cages, butt pack, and a front light (Inova flashlight with a Niteize bar mount).
To come: upgrading to Tiagra level components, drop bars with barcons, better lighting, front rack and panniers. Maybe a Brooks saddle, as this Scott is only good for about 20 miles before I have to do far too much standing...

You gonna eat that?
A good looking bike, jpolaski. Reminds me of my bike, although yours is a little nicer. I started with a flat bar but didn't like it so I changed out to an Origin8 Space Bar which seems better.
