Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My soloist frame should be shipping today. I’ve got 90% of the build parts found.

I ended up going with an R5 stem for full internal routing. Had to get a different headset cap/cover for it, which was fairly easy to find. I had to order the split spacers from a place in Austria-nobody else had them.

I still haven’t decided on a bar, need something with full internal but don’t think I want the stock bar from the R5. Gonna explore around a bit more- if anyone has suggestions I’m all ears.

Still haven’t got a crank, but that’s easy. Saddle is harder, I’ve always just ridden what’s stock but may try actually getting something nice this time around.

should be a pretty easy build since it’s AXS. Hardest part will be bleeding the brakes.

I had to put new switches in the master bath that had 3 entrances. Each has a switch with a dimmer on one. All had 4 wire, and one had a red in it. I was about halfway through. Took my eye off the box for a second when I dropped a screw. Lost my mental picture of what went where. Had to call my Brother the Electrician to come unravel things before I burned the place down.

It's going to be mid 50's (temps) today. I might have to take .5 day and go ride Contador at the beach. See if I like the changes I've made.

Yeah, red is always a RED flag (see what I did there?) when wiring 120v circuits.

My all time favorite are neutral (white) wires used as hot wires without any black tape on it. Always takes me a while to figure out what the fork is going on when I do electric work and my non-contact tester beeps on wires other than black or red.

Wow, this is one of the few acts I saw live back in the 1980's, he played a small club in Baltimore (8x10, maybe?).

RIP

Yes. Too many wires I had to consult the book, back in the day. I also would draw a picture that any 1st grader would laugh at. (pre-cellphone) Now I'm mostly OK with it, but still take pause in the name of safety. 110/220 jolts are not as good.

I shocked myself once and never again. Electricity makes no sense to me. Back when I learned how to fly the dash 8 we had to know all the systems like the back of your hand. Going from a 4,000 pound cessna, to a 43,000 pound twin turbo prop was a big leap. The electrical made my head explode. To this day I still have that dash 8 junk stuck in my head.

Fun Fact. When a TRU fails it smells like tuna fish. When an inverter fails it smells like maple syrup.

Well, my outlook is assisted by the fact I’m retired, true, but even when I was working I had to clear the driveway at 4:30 in the mornings before heading out when it snowed. I looked at it as a workout. Crosstraining.

When an electric car's 300volt coolant heater burns up it smells like there is a fire in the shop, even days later when the burned unit is at the far end of an open shop. If you touch it you will have that plasticy electrical fire smell on your skin even after you take a shower.

When certain limited slip differentials go bad they smell like natural gas when opened up. The smell is so strong that the owner of the dealer called the fire dep't and the gas company and they evacuated the whole place while they searched for a gas leak. This was after he was told what the smell was and he wouldn't listen because his nose told him otherwise.

Modern diesel pickup truck exhaust smells like propane to me. Unless they are running bio-diesel, then they smell like French fries.

They all smell like crap to me. I always think of how what I am currently smelling is already inside my lungs polluting my brain and lungs!

I remember riding behind city busses when they belched out black smoke. I was happy that they switched to CNG. Trash trucks here are on CNG, too.

One thing about living in California is that because cars don't rust out here, there are WAY more older cars out here. So you find yourself in traffic behind cars from before smog controls sometimes, and WOW, does the exhaust smell! Even if the cars are in good tune, it's really bad! We forget how bad it used to be. Imagine being in traffic with ALL the cars putting that crap out!

I first got my emission testing license in 1983 so I did smog testing and repair for 36 years. Worked on my share of old crap.
When I was a ute you couldn't see the hills around the house and it hurt to breathe deep. I remember burning eyes while travelling in my dad's car on the fwy.

I still smell the old cars when they drive by when I'm on the bike.

I remember flying into LAX and the brown stuff was so thick you could not see the city when approaching for landing. Hated going to LA back then. Now I rather enjoy it.
