Nice 10 mile ride today. 4degF, light snow coming down, and about 1/2in fresh snow on the ground. Roads were not treated yet so it was nice and quiet and clean and all I could hear was the snow squeaking under those studded tires. Alot of ice patches hidden under the fresh snow as I could feel the studs biting and slipping a little when my speed got a little too ambicious. Very refreshing to get out as I have not commuted to work in over a week because of working out of town.

A chilly morning turned into a warmish day, so I was shedding layers during my 46 mile breakfast ride.

It was a weird route, in that I rode much of it twice. I rode to meet the bike club, then later in the ride, retraced a good part of that path, then retraced more of the bike club route on the way home.

I'm OK with winter riding in Minnesota, but everybody needs a break, so I used FF miles and bugged out to Las Vegas for the long weekend. Rented a Synapse at McGhie's and rode the Red Rock Canyon/Blue Diamond loop, amounting to 45 miles and 2800 feet of climbing. It was a bright sunny Saturday and there were tons of cyclists out enjoying it. It was such a pleasure to be on a road bike.

BUT this midwesterner had the unpleasant experience of learning about goathead flats. First, at the base of Red Rock Canyon, and then AGAIN some miles later. Well, I actually don't know the source of the second flat - I never found the culprit. But of course with the rented bike there was only one spare tube, so there I was out in the desert, stranded.

Or not. By dumb luck the second flat happened right outside of the hamlet of Blue Diamond. Blue Diamond is tiny (the sign outside of town says "Population: Low. Elevation: High. Wild Burros: ?" There's not even a filling station or a convenience store. But walking in to town I discovered that McGhie's has a branch store there, for renting MTB bikes, as Blue Diamond, I guess, is a big gateway to MTB trails. Lucky me. Chris was manning the shop - fixed my flat, gave me a spare tube and CO2 cartridges. He too was perplexed as to origin of the second flat, so decided to swap in a new tire while he was at it.

I cruised back to the valley down that great 1% grade that goes forever - 24 MPH with little effort.

Nice and muddy Sky Ride 11 miler (as well as 4 miles each way to the venue and back).

On muddy shale tracks accross Carrington Moss https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Moss) and some road work to Red House Farm for hot chocolate and cake, tho not impressed with £3.40 price tag .

At the beginning and end of the ride there is a a lovely big puddle next to a Motorbike barrier and horse stile which made it really difficult to get through without putting feet down and getting them wet but I have worked out how to do it without getting them soaked lol

Last time I did the ride it was a decent sized puddle which most of us waded through but this time I was determined not to get my feet wet as the weather is freezing right now. But today it was icy and massive so I managed to step accross the horse stile and lift my bike over it before remounting and pushing off through the deep puddle without falling off, quite impressed I must say lol

Overcrowded MUP today but good enough to get a nice 30 mile ride with my cycling buddy, Frank. Luckily, the winds were calm and not strong like they were yesterday.

I only did 55 miles today. Was going to do a metric century but the sun was going down and my light indicated that it was running low(I have it flash during daylight hours) and I feared that I wouldn't have a light when it was getting dusk or dark--I was not going to ride without a headlight at dusk or twighlight. But, this is most in a single ride I've done in a couple of months. I have done several 42 milers, but I needed to fit in more miles in one ride if I want to be prepared for the 2 centuries coming up in the spring. It didn't help, or perhaps it was helpful(workout wise), that I was fighting a nasty headwind or crosswind(against).

We got out for a few hours, 22.5 miles on the tandem. Temperature about 50degF, very windy. But nice!

For New England in January? Too warm!

I did 9.1 miles this afternoon (according to Strava upload, actually the app called it 9.2 until I uploaded and my bike computer showed 9.32). I probably could (and should) have done more but I over dressed for this ride. It is really nice here today, hope it holds for a couple of days.....what am I saying, this is Texas, it won't hold.

Did 11 mile loop today, balmy, 47degF. Another heat wave. The snow was melting. The rest of the week will be frigid as cold Canadian air is on the way and not slated to go up above the single numbers for the rest of the work week.

50 miles up along the eastshore from Alameda to Point Richmond with the ride club. Everyone was in a hurry to get back before the game started so the pace was fast. I love a ride where I know I have pushed my limits. It makes the pie afterwards much more rewarding.

Less than five miles this afternoon in subfreezing dry weather - replaced the rear brake/cable on the commuter 'bent yesterday and tried it out today. Tried out the cheap insulated gloves Santa brought me, too - should be ok for colder weather if worn with poly liner gloves. Supposed to get down into single digits and teens over the next couple of days.

I rode about 11 miles today, with bright sunshine but the shadow areas had a thick snow-like layer of frozen fog on the ground. It was very beautiful, but slick. I rode my Rans Stratus recumbant after fixing the front brakes a bit (they were dirty and a bit misaligned.

two miles--to the LBS--crank bearings were creaking like a rocking chair on an old front porch, when me and mrs circumnavigated the Mall yesterday, prior to the inauguration. (it hit 60d F yesterday)

Tried a new park today with a very nice trail. Did 10.1 miles (strava lost .1 mile as usual). Embarrassed myself by trying to downshift when I shouldn't have and making the chain come off the sprocket. Of course, never having owned a bicycle with gears before I had no idea how to fix it. But a little logic got me going again. Lesson learned.

Ah, I should not put as much faith in the weatherperson.... The forecast for today was for a cloudy, cool 50's morning. So since we had planned on starting our ride on a different part of our rail trail, a 30 minute drive, we dressed for the weather. However, by the time we arrived it was sunny an already 60 degrees F. 25 miles later, stripped to, well let's call it at least legal, I was feeling a bit like the guy on the Progressive Insurance ad..... it's a sauna in here. Oh well....

Finally got in a ride after being in Atlanta Thursday through yesterday. No rides there, CE class for the wife and we delivered the R500 Cannondale to our daughter so she can increase her riding, as requested. Rode an out and back, mid-afternoon, still a chill in the North wind here even though it hit 65 F today. LS jersey and tights did the trick for me.

25 miles with a friend this afternoon. Even though it was in the mid 60sF when we started, after it clouded over and a little breeze picked up it got a tad chilly near the end for basically summer kit. I really need to get some winter kit...
