Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

question about Malone 3.1 brakes

They are freaking LOUD!! I bought the 2013 new about a week ago. Most components are 105. Is it just because the pads need broke in or are they junk? I remember seeing a review where someone else complained about brakes and tires. I had the lbs change tires to Gator skins. Should I change pads?

Suggestions please

Steve

I just checked. No where was "105" stamped on the brake calipers.

Malone brakes? But seriously, I think the Madone 3.1 has generic brakes not Shimano. Upgrading pads might help

They're probably tektro junk or something. 105 5800 brakes are wonderful.

I think the Madone 2.x and 3.x brakes aren't even the old Tektro 540 junk from before...they're even worse now. Anyway, if they seem to operate well, keep the brakes but swap the pads to salmon or dual-compound Kool-Stop pads. I did that with my older Madone 2.1 w/ Tektro's and it was a great improvement.

Also, do the pads have toe-in? Ie are the fronts of the pads closer to the rim than the backs? Can those holder accommodate toe-in if it is not there now? (With some brakes and some pads, you can loosen the nut that secures the pad, toe them in with your fingers and re-tighten. Or you may have to spin a lopsided washer around to get the toe-in,) Really, any shop setting up a bike that nice should be seeing to it that there is some toe-in to the brake pads. To not is violating a fact every mechanic worth his grease has known for the past half? full? century.

I have the same bike/same year. I replaced the stock pads the week I got the bike with the dual compound kool stop, much less noisy. The calipers are some generic Tektro set that are pretty awful.

Also, if you're getting a squeal, maybe scrub down your braking surfaces on your wheels with a wet rag and wipe the pads themselves too, a tiny bit of lube getting on the rims will make them sound awful when you brake.

Beware the caliper springs. I guess sweat worked its way into the spring on my rear brake, and it rusted and stopped giving resistance after about a year of owning the bike. I ended up buying a pair of new SRAM Apex calipers for something like $30, they seem to be much better and they match the crank on the bike so there's that.

So should I change the pads or the whole caliper?
Is this what I need?

Shimano Ultegra BR-6800 Brake Caliper

how difficult is it to change? I have every tool I could possibly need

You're on the right track, but there is a 5800 version ( 105 ) of those brakes ( breaks ) that will work fine also.

You should only need a 5mm allen wrench for the cable bolt and the mounting bolt. Might need a 4mm for the shoes, I can't remember right now.

I also have a 3.1. Make sure the braking surface is clean. Changing the pads will help also, but in the end I ended up changing out for the 5800 105's.

More to the point, 5800 brakes are a great value, and work really well. Easy install, also.
