Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brake Questions

I recently purchased my first Road bike. I got a Giant Defy 1 and paid to have the brakes upgraded from the stock tektro to shimano 105.

When I told them I wanted to upgrade I assumed (stupid of me) that I would be getting the new 5700 series brakes. I didn't notice until today that they actually gave me the 5600 series. I'm a little pissed about this... unfortunately I had to drive a 4-hour round trip in order to get my bike (it was the last one in my size within a 3-hour radius). It's not worth the hassle for me to return and have them exchange the brakes.

From a technical/performance standpoint is there that much of a difference between the 105-5600 and the 105-5700 series brakes? With that same thought. Is there that much of a difference going between 105 to Ultegra as far as brake performance is concerned?

They are supposedly better but I've used the older 105 brakes and they are solid.

I'm not sure either 105 is a significant upgrade over the Tektro. What model did you have? The tektro dual pivots seem to be pretty decent if decent pads are swapped in.

at this level, pads make more of a difference.

The bike came with tektro r540 dual pivot.

What type of brake pads should I be looking at? I probably won't get new ones for a while. But it's good to know what to look out for as far as sales go.

For pads, many recommend both Kool Stops and Swiss Stops. Each come in a variety of colors that serve different riding conditions but I just have the basic Kool Stop black on both my bikes and find them to work very well, with better grip than the stock pads that came in my Ultegra brakes (6500).

Especially for brakes there is very little difference between Tiagra-105-Ultegra-Dura Ace.
They all brake perfectly fine.
Even the weight difference is very small ... look it up and you'll be amazed at how much more expensive a Dura Ace brake is and how little less it actually weighs compared to 105 or Ultegra.

Exactly ... I would pay double if it said "super dura ace" just because.
