That punishment doesn't really seem to fit the crime. He took another mans life and ruined a family. 4 and a half years? Seems like nothing.

Strong evidence that if you wish somebody dead, buy them a bicycle, wait until they ride it in the street and then run them over. Saves the cost of a hitman.

He wouldn't have even got a ticket if he hadn't been drunk.

Gee, and I was thinking that 4 1/2 years is quite a lot compared to what they get around here. I've been in the sticks too long and complete nonpunishments for killing with a car have become something I consider normal.

Long sentences serve to prevent future commission of similar crimes. Although 4 years is probably not enough for such a serious offense, if N.M. is anything like MA., then any sentence over 2 years will send the the convict to state prison, rather than county jail or "house of correction". This is good.
The defender asked the judge to give the defendant "probation". Just the fact that that was introduced, denotes a serious flaw in our criminal justice system.
Usually, when chronic breech of justice happens, money is involved. As B C has alluded to, drunk drivers killing people and getting away with it seems to be the status quo.
There is no possible, logical explanation for this except for the power that the alcoholic beverage industry wields in D.C. (and most-likely, in state capitals, as well). All I know is that some force is behind the continued and pervasive dilution of drunk driving laws.

NM is relatively lenient with DUI convictions. When you don't have a felony charge until you have 3 convictions on your sheet, there is little motivation to change culture.
