Dura-ace 8 SIS hub details

Hello,

Just to let you know, I've tried to answer this question myself via Sheldon's site. I'm still a little confused

I bought a rear wheel for the sole purpose of reusing the hub with another rim and spokes. It's an older Dura-ace 8 SIS rear hub. When I was buying it, I didn't look too closely, but the 8 speed cassette on it doesn't have hte lockring I'm used to. It appears to be a Uniglide (this from Sheldon) cassette.

My questions are: How do I get it off (can I just use a pin spanner or the like?)
and
Can I put a modern shimano cassette on there?
When I figured it was a newer hyperglide, I was under the impression that 8,9, and 10 speed were more or less compatible (save the issues w/ 10 spd specific hubs). Now that I see 7/8 stamped on the smallest cog, I'm worried.

Any insight is appreciated

edit: I checked and it's 130mm spacing

the more I look around, the more I think I have a uniglide only hub and the cassette comes off with two chain whips. Well, that sucks

You can replace the freehub body with an 8-spd Hyperglide unit. Difficult to find, but they do exist.

You are correct. As Danno said, it is possible to upgrade to hyperglide, but it's a challenge to find the parts.

A length of old chain held in vise grips can function as a 2nd chain whip.

Fixed it for you.

And FWIW, you'll also need a special tool that's very hard to find as well, although my LBS has one. I just can't find a body.

Bigger picture: Tiagra rear hubs are readily available for about $40 + shipping.

Well, I've converted many of these Dura-ace 8-spd Uniglide wheels to modern-day 8/9/10-spd Hyperglide without any problems, even without finding a replacement Hyperglide body.

I did it first by grinding narrower the wider tab on the Hyperglide cogs to fit Uniglide freehub bodies. This made it easy to mess up the cog-to-cog orientation and shifting, while better than Uniglide, wasn't as optimal as it could be. Just took some time to make sure each cog was aligned with the previous one.

The 2nd way I did it was to grind narrower one of the flanges on the Uniglide freehub-body to accept the wider tab on the Hyperglide cogs. This was a one-time deal and the freehub can accept standard Hyperglide cassettes.

Then you'd keep the threaded top-cog from the Uniglide cassette because it locks the cassette in place. Not being Hyperglide wasn't a big deal because the chain never has to climb onto that cog. The only additional mod needed was to grind off 1mm from the built-in spacer for 9/10-spd cassettes.

There's an additional 1mm of cassette-width on a 9-spd (+2mm on 10-spd), so the top spin-on sprocket will sit further outwards. If your chain ends up rubbing on the dropout, you'll need to move an axle-washer from the left to the right side for additional clearance.

I don't know if this will work with an older DA freehub or not. Might be worth looking into. https://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=848718030855

Unfortunately this series of Dura-Ace hubs requires one with a big spiraly thing, like you can see at the bottom of this picture:

Again, not something I'd recommend throwing money at if you just want a hub to use. Tiagra's a great value.

There is also a special smaller 4-prong tool needed to reach in to remove the freehub-body. Not to be confused with the larger 2-prong tool used to unscrew the bearing-race and disassemble the freehub-body itself.

You are replying to a thread that is 9 years old. Holy carp, man, it's almost ready for middle school.

I would suggest you sign up for premium membership and put them on the Marketplace. There's enough vintage nuts around that they should sell quickly if you're reasonable on the price.

😁🤣🤣 I thought that might get a funny reaction. I don't have any idea what to price them at. I'm I'm a Facebook vintage mtb group, probably should find one for road stuff.

Hmmm... look around The Pro's Closet on Ebay or their website. You might be able to ballpark an asking price.

Hi, Danno! How you doin'?

Anyway, there's a real nice wheelset on Ebay right now- Dura-Ace 7402 hubs, Campy Lambda rims:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Campagnolo-...-/323301227254
I think the asking price is nuts, but it is Ebay after all!

Hey. Jeff! Doing well, been racing motorbikes! Here’s practice day @ Laguna Seca couple weeks ago.

Might be up in your are next month at The Ridge. Working on streamlining project for next year I need to pick your brains on: Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge.

All these old parts are really only worth nostalgic value to geezers! Kinda like DeDion or Model-T autos, modern stuff is so much better. We’lll see how much that eBay wheels go for. Might just put mine up at 50% less.
