can you have a front derailleur with an IGH

Hello,

I’m getting an internal gear hub (Alfine 8) with a chain tensioner since I have vertical dropouts, installed as replacement to a rear derailleur. Can I still use the front derailleur with the 2 chain rings or should I replace it with a single chainring and remove the FD?
Thanks

How would that work if you didn't have a rear derailleur to tension the chain? No, you can't do that unless you use something to take up the slack in the chain when you're in the small ring.

Shimano makes a chain tensioner, also in the Alfine group, that should work for you. The unit mounts to the RD hanger and has a range of 16 teeth on your front.

Besides their ability to shift the chain ft ders do act as a chain guide too. Lacking one, leads to all the 1x dual thickness chain rings and clutch rear ders. Andy

With a tensioner , can I then use the front derailleur?

Yeah, you can run the screws in on your old derailleur to hold the chainline, or Rohloff makes a tensioner. Just messing around, I used a Surly Singleator for a while but the chainrings weren't much different in tooth count.
