The second shop was family owned; but had "hippies" doing the repairs. It was somewhat nicer than the first shop, with carpeting on the showroom floor, but not a glossy auto showroom for sure. They did sell European brands, with Raliegh as their bread-and-butter offering. They were also the Viscount dealer, and it was there that I bought mine. They also had the Viscount scale to weigh it on; and owner's high wheel bike on display in the front window. The building is still there, but was a bed store last time I noticed it.
There were two Schwinn shops in town. The oldest one, probably the oldest of them all, was downtown and family owned. It had been there forever like most downtown establishments, and looked like it; as they do. It was the only store I did not work at; and it too is gone.
The other Schwinn store was part of a chain owned in Baton Rouge. It shared the building with a Toys-are-Us, and was clean, modern looking store, just like the Toys-R-Us half next door. It was definitely ran by hippies; it was the place where I had a personality clash with the manager, and was fired in two months; the one and only time in my life I was ever fired. But of the four stores, it is the only one that is still in business today.

Yep, that's it!
Oh, remember the cars with the jacked up rear end? One night, one of our customers was riding his bike on a dark country road when he ran square into the back of one such car that was parked on the road. His front wheel was fine, his fork was fine; but both his top and down tubes buckled. We removed them and soldered in a new pair. His face hit the trunk lid; his jaws were wired together for a month.

The shop is Backpeddling in Guelph (only a few blocks from my house!).....the guys that run it started with a small used bike store but expanded last year into what you see.
The shop guys are heavily into mountain bikes and chopper/customs, but they love all bikes and as you can see a really cool museum that runs around the entire shop up high.
If you're passing through let me know - would love to meet fellow C&V'ers face to face. And lots of good pubs very near by.

I like that pic so much I made it my wallpaper. Then I got curious: Who's George Garner? He was one of the three people who bought the Waterford plant, and there are still three George Garner bike shops in Chicagoland, one of which looks like the pic above (which according to the file name was a Van Nuys, CA, shop). The pic above looks so impressive. Far more impressive, in fact, than the shop of the same design in Northbrook, IL.
