Hell, it's better than COMMUNITY SERVICE, like the last one! And what did Bertonatti get...?

Even if reduced for 'good time', 10 years is no joke.

I bet you on appeal, it will be reduced, not to 'Time Served', but to half of the original sentence.

He admitted he was 100% at fault before he was sentenced to 10 years, thinking he might get off easy. Any bets that he appeals now that he knows his words did not get him off?

It should be noted that he got 10 years for leaving the scene, not for the accident itself. By that logic, he would have gotten no punishment if he had stayed?

Of course it will be appealed, but if the article is accurate, the sentence is almost exactly consistent with guidelines, so I'd surprised if it were reduced significantly. Of course you never know.

W can't draw any conclusions regarding the accident (unless there's more info elsewhere), but very often hit and runs like this involve alcohol, and the driver has to hide out until his blood clears. My guess is that there was indirect evidence to support a DWI charge, and the plea was acceptd in lieu of pursuing that, with both sides preferring not to gamble on a trial.

His drivers license was also permanently revoked according to the article (which provided they actually back that up with some teeth and make sure he never drives again) is the part that makes a whole lot more sense to me.

From the article I was unable to tell if what he did was a deliberate malicious act where he deliberately ran down the cyclist with his vehicle or if it was an act of criminal negligence in his responsibility to safely operate a dangerous high speed heavy vehicle. If it was the former, he got off way too light. If it was the later, then provided they actually enforce his sentence and actually keeping him from ever driving a high speed heavy vehicle ever again for the rest of his life then I think the punishment was appropriate.

So there was no evidence of DUI or DWI but he did leave the scene and washed his SUV in a vain attempt to hide the damage...
