That’s a Fujita Hupel Rider or something. Japanese brand I believe that was specified for Fuji’s I think, Rob.

Greek letters mean Superb or Super?

As said above. It would be the stock post on very early Fuji Newest and Finest. I have a 72 Newest that did not come with one, or for that matter most stock parts. I have since acquired one. Not certain what else it was used on, but that is the timeframe. Perhaps the early Schwinn World Voyager?

OK, the lettering above "Rider" seems vaguely Russian, and does look to say "Super," but the second letter (the Russian "U" looks like a "Y") is kind of clunky and looks like someone was trying to copy something by hand. The third letter is a "p" (looks like a "pi" symbol) but is also kind of messed up Got me, I'm stumped.

That's odd. Why the faux-Russian/Greek lettering on a Japanese seatpost?!

There's a thread here on BF from 2011, search for "Criep Rider Seatpost?" And an Ebay listing; as they said in that thread from 13 years ago, everyone seems to have a different spelling of it.

Maybe the Japanese manufacturer (Fujita/Belt/Fuji) was just having a bit of fun and messing with the biking world about everyone copying the Campy NR?

It’s Cyrillic lettering spelling out “Super”. Also happens to translate as “super” in Russian.

This website wouldn't let me write Russian for "very strange," which transliterates as "ochin stranno." I guess no support for the non-Roman letters in Cyrillic.

Cyrillic and Greek writing are quite diffent, but share similarities in certain letters, like for example the "Pi-sign" π for p and the "Y" for our u. However, the "C" for S (think "CCCP" -> "SSSR" as found on russian sports clothes or spacecrafts , most famously) is only used in cyrillic, the Greek use the "Sigma" Σ - so this inscription is cyrillic, not greek.

Yes, I'm familiar with all that, but it begs the question of "Why?" Copying Campy was suggested, so I guess that's it. But it's still pretty strange.

Mysterious, I agree. Maybe that person doing the design winged it, I imagine all those different western alphabets can be as confusing and look sorta the same to someone from Asia as the different Asian alphabets are for me. Kind of the equivalent to Western people getting a tattoo with some random Chinese characters just because it's cool?!

OK, that explanation makes a lot of sense, honestly. Same reason for why I have a Soviet-era jacket that has a patch that says "Turism" (in Cyrillic) on it. It looked cool. And I have a penchant for cheap water socks from Rite-Aid, which for the past few years have had a log on them that says "SPORT". It looked cool to someone.

Many years ago I went to Russia on a business trip. Before I went I tried to familiarize myself with the Cyrillic alphabet and the sounds each letter made. One evening as I was walking the streets of Nizhny Novgorod, I was trying to read business names and see if I could figure out what they were. I picked on at random. It looked like this:

I sounded it out, one letter at a time, then started trying to put the sounds together. It says "Jackpot"! Yes, I had mastered the Russian language.

Actually, there was a very funny joke back in Soviet days which spoke to the quality of Russian dining establishments. It's kind of a long story about a guy figuring out the letters, etc., and was very proud of himself to have figured out that "PECTOPAH" was just a literal translation of "restaurant." A restaurant in the Soviet Union! Food! But then he went in, realized there was nothing worth eating, and realized that it really just said "PECTOPAH" (pektopah!).

Probably sounds better if you speak Russian and/or spent any time there.

That is not what Russian would look like, it's Greek or something else, but yes "super" in one way or another.

My wife, who is Russian, says it looks weird - which is as I thought and why I called her in. In particular the "u" should look like a lower case "y" and not like that stylized thing. Also, Russians do not extend the top line over "p" like the Greeks do for "pi." As she approached the screen she said, "it's not Russian, it's Greek," but ended by saying, "it can do."

It is most certainly not Greek, for which the translation of super is σούπερ. It's also not Serbian Cyrillic, as "u" looks the same there as in Russian. It's just messy, stylized Cyrillic...

It's just a case of someone in Japan messing up Cyrillic. Due to the general spelling Russian or Serbian are the closest matches, as far as I can tell. Greeks spell and pronounce "super" very differently.
