The lightly textured padded vinyl bar tape was used by many pro teams on their bikes going into the mid 80's and then seemingly falling out of popularity when the "Cork" tapes came out.
So, I'm surprised that I hardly see anyone in the forum using the padded vinyl tapes on their builds anymore.
The padded tapes are stil quite easy to find out there as what seems to be NOS.

That is exactly what I used on my Derosa merckx.

I wanted more than cotton. But I wanted to be somewhat vintage appropriate.

I’m not sure if it is Ambrosio or Bike Ribbon but I have that style on several bikes. I like the corkish stuff but the lighter colors show dirt to easily.

Ambrosio tape

I still have a package of bike tape after 30 odd years.

Bike Ribbon, Pelton, etc

Yep. Pelton/Ambrosio/3ttt/Bike Ribbon is my preferred tape. I have been buying it from a variety of eBay sellers. It is expensive these days, but last a long time, is comfortable, and to my eye looks right. I just finished renovating this 1985 Alan Record. My first aluminum bike and I like it a lot. Also pics of bike ribbon on my De Rosa, and GIOS.

I'm a big fan of Bike Ribbon, they are on 6 of my bikes in red, black and white. They can still be bought online for about $15 per set.
