I'd like to pick up a Trek fx for the best price possible. The Trek site is already showing 2019 models. Buying a brand new bike is a big deal to me. I've ridden ten fine bikes over the last 20 years and bought every one of them used. I enjoy wrenching and put lots of hours and dollars into each of them.

I'd like to get the best deal possible. I'm happy to go through an lbs and can order/buy in either the US or Canada.

Two questions:

What's the best strategy for getting the best deal this time of year?

What's it like having a warranty?

I'm open to various models. I don't care for disc brakes. I need an XL.

This might be the best time to buy a new Trek, but I'm not sure if this sale is strictly local or nationwide. My local Trek dealership just sent this e-mail out today.


Personally, given my time constraints and my relative noob status as a cyclist, I prefer to buy new, with a full warranty...give me a lot of peace of mind.

My friend was hoping for the same fall sale. What he found out was all the FX 5 and 6 are gone so he just purchased a FX 4

If the LBS has your size and trim level in stock, just negotiate with them. If they don't have it.... no deal obviously. but you could deal on a 2019. Unless you are in the south, that LBS will have that 2019 model sitting all winter in the showroom, why not sell it now for a small discount?

Just make sure you also keep other options open. Don't tell them that is your dreambike and only option. Tell them you also look at the Specialized, giant etc. equivalent. Poker face. Act like you really don't care if you buy now or next spring and only a good deal would move that up to now.

Your head won't asplode if you don't get the "best price possible." I'd rather spend my time doing something other than scouring the Internets for the lowest price in existence. And as a practical matter, you may never know if you got it for the lowest price possible. You mind find it for $X on line, but a LBS may be willing to sell one in your size for less, you just won't know it since you didn't visit the shop and inquire.

you can specify which dealer you pick it up thru..

I have a question and a couple of observations:
First, you say you could buy either in the US or Canada. Does this mean you have homes in both countries? I assume from your name that you live in Winnipeg. If that is your home, buying in the US would mean import duties, negating any savings, not to mention the low Canadian dollar.
You wish to know about warranty. If you live in one country and buy in another your warranty will exist where you bought the bike, not where you live. There is no downside to disc brakes, especially if you do any riding in the wet. If I were you, I would buy locally, shop around if there are more than one Trek dealers near you. It is end of season, an ideal time to shop for bikes in an area with a real winter. Older models will have limited selection, but if you can find a bike you like in a size that fits at a discount there is no disadvantage to buying a previous year's model. It is not unknown for a bike company to downgrade components to hold a price point, so study the specifications with care
