1990’s Schwinn MTB Stem

I have a 1995 Schwinn High Plains with a flat handlebar, installed in a basic stem where the handlebar slides through.

I would like to replace this handlebar with one that has a 50 mm rise.

Will I be able to slide the new handlebar through or will I need to order a new quill stem, adapter, etc.?

Many Thanks

The stem clamp should be 25.4mm, so you need to shop for a handlebar with 50mm rise and a 25.4mm clamp area on the handlebar.

If you go with the old stem you might need to spread the clamp open a little bit to give enough room to get any bends in the bar through. Not too much though. Some bars with compound bends can be challenging.

I wouldn't buy a new stem unless there is something you don't like about the old stem or it is broken or worn out. But be sure they are the correct size. Bikes don't all use the same size stuff..

when you slide your new bars in, rotating the "bend" to a position that has it pointing Down in relation to the Stem clamp will help!... Most, if not all, one bolt stem clamps are shaped to be narrower on their low side.... Once the bar bend is past the clamp, any orientation can be slid through easily................ no extra-wide spread needed.

I have found several of those.

My question is on the older stem since the 50° has a sharp angle bend will I be able to simply slide that handlebar through the stem once I remove the existing handlebar?

Should be no problem, other than a little twisting, turning of the handlebar as you work it through the stem clamp.

Yes. Very similar to that.

Also I assume I’ll need to replace the cables with longer ones.

Loosen the stem and move it up in situ 2".
I've never lucked out RE: long enough cables.
