Stages Cycling is shuttered

Another bike business goes into the ditch. Eek. How many of these recent failures are downstream of the Covid boom & bust? I'm guessing a lot.

Wow... this is a bit of a surprise. When I think "power meter", I typically think "Stages". Now I'm somewhat glad I didn't buy a power meter from them as there won't be a path to getting it serviced if it stops working.

Wow, just wow!

I’m extremely happy with my Stages, it was my first PM.
My second PM was Garmin Rally pedals as soon as SPD-SL became available.

The pedals add so much flexibility I don’t think I’d buy a crank PM again.

Bummer. I have two Stages power meters and they’re great. Both were also very cheap compared to other options.

I wonder what happens if/when they shut down the app? Will I still be able to connect and calibrate my power meter with Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, etc?

I would make sure I have the latest update for the StagesPower app. You own the app and it doesnt require connecting to their system to calibrate the PM, so it should continue to function.

I suspect if you turn off cellular & wi-fi the app will still calibrate your cranks using Bluetooth.
I’ve seen no indication it requires internet access.

bigger issue will be if the pull the app from the App Store. Grab it while you can.

If you've been following the reports, the handwriting was on the wall.

A friend said, "They laid half of them off, then they doubled that number."

Their parking lot has been empty and their doors locked for months, so I'd say they've effectively been shut down for a long time.

I see their latest version app is Stages Cycling not StagesPower.

It is OK some of the execs are now at Giant:
https://www.bicycleretailer.com/indu...rent-shut-down

The people at the top are taken care of ; )

Never really needed a powermeter but stages seemed like a neat concept using already built cranks for easy integration.

Currently there is a major slump in demand for bikes and bike products. Many of the people who bought bikes during COVID are no longer riding those bikes. I recently viewed a YouTube vid of a guy who calls himself the 'Bike Farmer'. This guy runs a small seasonal bike shop in the MIdwest. According to Mr. Bike Farmer less than 10% of his customers become regular bike riders.

There is a lot of competition for power meters now. Probably hurt them as much as anything. Power Meter City lists these:
Verve Magene Sigeyi XCADEY 4iiii Favero Garmin LOOK power2max Quarq ROTOR Shimano SRAM SRM Stages Wahoo

I was a bit surprised to see so many. Competition didn't do anything about prices though.

Well that sucks. I really like my Stages Bike, hopefully nothing happens to it where I need parts.

SRAM power meter spiders are dirt cheap nowadays, and the new crop of power meters coming from China are perfectly accurate according to reviews, and undercut all western brands on price. No wonder Stages was struggling.

It looks like they were struggling with all their product lines (power meters, gym bikes, smart bikes, bike computers) and some ongoing financial dispute with Giant. Maybe Giant will now acquire their assets on the cheap, although I’m not sure what those assets would consist of if all the staff are gone.

Five bike shops have closed in the Seattle area in the last year including my fave mtb shop, Single Track Cycles. So many dedicated and nice people out of a job - not to mention the poor owners bankruptcy.

Yep, have a Magene and a Sigeyi and they've both been perfect for me over thousands of kilometres of riding.
