7/21/23 Laguna Canyon Road Bike Lane Alert!
As you're heading south on 133 past the 73, do not be tempted to ride on the right side of the concrete k-rail!!! Stay in the bike lane you've been riding for the last 4 miles. The right side is open for construction traffic and a cyclist could be tempted to enter the area thinking they are safer being isolated from traffic--NO!!! In the attached photos, you can see there is a brutal metal plate that is used to knock off mud from construction equipment tires before they enter onto Laguna Canyon Road. Several cyclists have attempted to ride on the right side only to be surprised by this gnarly plate. It's hard to see because there's a slight curve in the road. Anything from popped tires to destroyed rims to very hurt cyclists have occurred. I rode the same stretch of 133 the prior Saturday but had no issues staying in the traffic-side bike lane. *If you choose to ride the construction side, be ready to take action as you approach El Toro.
A last second hop up a curb and onto the dirt isn't very safe either.

They're called 'rumble strips' (sometimes 'rumble plates'). 30 years ago it was a nice wide shoulder going up-and-down Laguna Canyon Road. Then the Hwy 73 was punched through, the road was slightly widened to stuff another lane in and the road design gods didn't leave a whole lot of shoulder for bicycles. Last time I road it was in the late 1990s and I wasn't too comfortable going up or down on it. (I moved out of Irvine).
