1985 6 x 2 speed cassette replacement
I have a 1985 Peugeot City Express (hybrid) made in Japan that has all of the original parts. My cassette has broken teeth and is so rusty I can barely read the part information.
The bike is equipped with: SIS thumb friction shifters, cantilever brakes, Shimano Tourney derailleur,Shimano Front Derailleur, FD-Z202, (Clamp On, 28.8 mm, Double Rings), rim and spokes are in good condition.
I found a Shimano freewheel 6 speed MF-Z012 cassette - cog for sale on e-bay. Will it fit my bike?

For a 1985 bike, 90% chance it's a freewheel, but cassettes were starting to catch on.
Can you post a closeup picture of your cogs to determine what you have ?

Suppliers to Bike shops, for repairs, Will have more legacy spare parts than online discount sellers .
So You may have to show up, with your Bike at your LBS..
Cannot see Your Bike , so, Good Luck with that ...Do They accept returns?

The person that is selling the part doesn't know anything about the part. I uploaded to attachments a picture of the bike and the part.

You need to determine if you have a Free Hub or Free Wheel.
1985 "could" have a Uniglide cassette OR a Free Wheel.
Study this a bit to determine which you have-
Freewheel or Cassette?

Freewheel
I had to go somewhere and couldn't attach the photos. I checked my bike manual and it is a freewheel. The photo on e-bay is a freewheel. The seller posted a lot of photos and it looked a lot better than mine. It is only $20 and $7 for shipping. The other 6 sp freewheels were a lot more. I will try to attach photos again.

Your current freewheel doesn't look all that bad. Yes there's some surface rust but I'd expect that to disappear pretty quickly if you oil the chain and just ride the bike a bit. Broken teeth aren't very common, but frequently some of the teeth are smaller and a different shape to facilitate easier shifting.
If you want a replacement, the one you found would probably work since by '85 the freewheel threads were almost all the same 'English' standard. But if you look at Amazon, Niagara, and other bike parts sites you should be able to do better than the quoted $27 (incl. shipping). You'll also need the tool to remove the current freewheel and that depends on the make/model. A good closeup picture of the center portion of the freewheel with the wheel removed from the bike would help identify the type of tool needed. Or take the wheel to a LBS and pay them to remove the existing freewheel with one of their tools.

Thank You
I did find cheaper and expensive 6 sp freewheels but some had slight differences and made in Taiwan, Singapore, and China. I will see a LBS and see how much it costs to clean it. If it costs more than I may buy the tool and clean it myself. Thank you and all the other forum members for helping me out.

Definitely a Freewheel, and since the 'pie plate' is stamped with Shimano, i'd venture to say the FW is a Shimano, too.
Condition looks pretty good for an '85; if it ratchets smoothly, I wouldn't bother to replace it. The surface rust can be eliminated by a good spray with penetrating oil (wd-40, TKX, or the like) and a scrub with a steel-wire bristle brush. Riding the bike regularly will keep it from coming back.
It doesn't look to me like any of the teeth are broken, but as prathmann said, some of them may be ramped or beveled to help with the shifting.
If you do have the need to replace it, check around at a co-op, or an LBS that handles used bikes. They may have some on-hand that will go right on.
If it's a Shimano, and I'm pretty confident that it is, just about any 6-speed freewheel should fit (Shimano, SunRace, Falcon) I have '70s bikes with brand-new freewheels on them, they're just about universal.
Our local used bike 'specialist' charges $20 installed. Even buying a FW retail, it should be between $10 and $15.
I turn my own wrenches, so i buy my own parts, Niagara Cycle is my go-to for those oddball old-bike parts.

Thank you for the information. I decided to clean it myself. I bought a Park Freewheel remover and already have a steel wire brush and WD-40. I wasn't sure if any 6 sp freewheel would work until you and prathmann educated me. Thank you!
