Anodizing Weirdness…..

Anodizing Weirdness…..
A friend is building a vintage (lugged) style bike for the MADE show and asked if we could do something special for the components.
Coupled with meeting a guy at a wine event I was a panelist at, who anodizes for a living.
Gold was the idea we came up with.
the cranks came out great. 800 grit sandpaper got rid of the toe strap marks
the seat post, even though polished has strange marks. Most of the marks will be below the insert line, but still.
then there’s the front derailleur.
we both assumed the parts were aluminum
afterall, it was previously anodized silver.
BUT, … they say the back part is pot metal and will not accept the dye.
Strange.

Actually, most silver things are anodized with clear.

Maybe black anodize the chain rings to go with the front derailleur.

It's been done.
This guy had a bunch of gold anodized Campy parts for sale on eBay a few years ago: seat post, cranks and derailleurs for sure, and I think brake calipers, brake levers and pedals, too. Your cranks are downright subtle by comparison.

Campagnolo offered blue and gold anodized hubs, pedals, and cranks for the BMX market. I think these were Pista cranks and Tipo hubs, offered for a year or two around 1983.

Zinc - the primary constituent of most "pot metals" - is quite electronegative relative to aluminium, almost as much as iron, and their process if it does that to pot metal probably also does it to steel-and-ally.

I biked them there. They have a $50 minimum and I found out later I could have added more parts to the order and still been within the $50 minimum.
They used to do all Chris King's work until Chris invested in his own anodizing company.

I have a blue Campy 43 tooth 144 BCD 1/8" chainring that has been seen on my avatar photo bike. Made for BMX BITD. A Seattle trackie and forum mate on a long lost forum picked it up. Gave it to me when I was setting up Jessica J, that bike. Her blue dress. (On 175 Sugino 75s. Pretty spiffy! She struts wearing it.)

the great Jon Williams RIP (aka Drillium) had an anodizing shop in Medford OR that he "trained up" to closely replicate the silver gray of Campy components.
I have a set of his lightly machined and anodized IRD cranks.
The gold seems a bit too "gaudy" on a bike, to me, at least whole components. Trim bits, maybe.
having said that, I just got a "unicorn" rainbow anodized water bottle cage from Silca, and matching bolts.
mounted on my custom Mark Dinucci frame, which a couple of you have ridden.
