Riding thru the mine fields
Today was one mine field after another.
Worst was a piece of furniture, musta fell out at about 60 mph,
wood chunks, boards with screws, screws & nails
Covering 1/2 the lane & the 2' outside the white line
for about 75 yards.
Missing with the front tire,
thinking where's the back tire gonna be.
Made it with air still in the tires. Whew!
Several other junky spots along the way in bunches,
One of those days,
Got an extra mile just sashaying . LOL

I’m not sure they ever run sweepers
here on the side roads. I see them on city streets & in subdivisions, but not
on the roads.
Maybe at night.
Road maintenance , in a state with high gasoline taxes & fees is rare.
In the Palm Springs area anyway.
“58.3 cents per gallon in total taxes and fees on gasoline in California”
2nd only to PA.
Just venting
There is a 1/2 mile section on Dillon,
East bound lane, that’s pot hole & crack free. Smooth is soooo nice to ride on.

We have mine fields around here, especially in the winter:
It is the goose crap from these mentally-handicapped Canadian Geese that refuse to migrate.
They spend the winter organizing themselves into vast flocks, launching into the air, flying around in formation in aimless circles, then they land and resume crapping on the bike paths.
So my winter bike is the one with fenders.

Make sure you have people to toss them food and bread crumbs on the bike paths (too hard to go to a vacant field). That way they'll return to the bike paths, and hang out waiting for the next handout. And, of course, lose their fear of people and bikes.

As far as road shoulders, if it is really bad (nails sticking up), either on the road or on the shoulder, I'll often stop and throw the stuff off the road.
I have thought I should be a bit more proactive about keeping my primary commuting routes clean.

Now back in the 1990's when I was in Schaumburg IL, there were always fools putting bread out for them.
