You know, folks, even if your lightest C&V bike is a tank, I'd still like to hear from ya.

Just sayin'.

Hmm - interesting transformation from the original Mavic group. Do you feel a significant difference off the line with this build? I'd expect it to be quite stiff off the line in the first place, given that its 753.

Hard to say. Except for the bars and stem, I changed everything, so it would be hard to pinpoint where the biggest change came from. Probably the wheels are what contributed the most to changing the ride. It was lovely before, and even better now. Of the bikes I own, this one is still my favorite.

Now with a digital scale it weighs in at 24.8-lbs complete. The UO-8 weighs around 25.2-lbs with alloy rims and 27x1 3/8" cross tires and alloy seatpost IIRC. I'm going to be aiming for 22-lbs when I build out the Bottecchia Professional one of these days.
My Viscount Aerospace G.P. has also gained weight over the years for the same reasons. When I first got it, it had tubular rims and the aluminum "death fork"; it weighed 21 pounds on the Viscount spring scale with toe clips/pedals.

Tubulars did not cut it for city riding; so I replaced the rims with Super Champion 700C rims. Then, I went ahead and installed the Tange steel fork Yamaha sent me (kicking self for not hanging onto the aluminum fork); with replacement saddle, cheap tires and tubes, and computer, it now tips the scales at 24 lbs.

Here's a question you may not know, or maybe someone else might, but is the Gios basically the same as the Tommasini Tecno? or are they totally different?

Edit: never mind, apparently from the Gios web site they no longer make the lugged frame.

I think back in the late 70's I reduced the weight of my '73 Competition to about 21.5 lbs by substituting the stock seatpost with a micro-adjust SR Royal, changing the steel-caged Raleigh 501 pedals for Alloy-caged Olimpics (purchased for $13 from Bike Warehouse nee Nashbar, IIRC) and changing to a really light set of tubulars. I also changed the Carlton binder bolt to a TA allen bolt. I may have also shed a few grams by substituting Universal Super 51 sidepulls for the original Weinmann center-pulls. I still have all the parts, but the bike isn't configured that way anymore.

I knew a guy back in the 70's went crazy with a drill and managed to get his bike down to 17.5 pounds. But his crank snapped due to all the holes!! But the crank functioned for about 2 or 3 months.

When I say crazy I mean he drilled holes into the main tubes of the frame as well.

Seems like the Vitus 979 wins the vintage weight-weenie category. Mine weighed in at 19 pounds (60 cm) when I built it up with a mix of Campy parts and tubulars. I've tried to lose some weight on steel bikes, the only things that really help make a bike decidedly non-vintage (carbon fork, seat post, etc.). I learned from painful experience that a super-light saddle is not worth it, either!

when one considers that mild steel weighs in at roughly .282 lbs/cu. in. it's really quite pointless to start drilling holes everywhere in a bike. the costs eventually have to outweigh the gains.

I just found a July '92 issue of Bicycling that has an article "Bikes of the Titans". They test two of Greg Lemond's bikes, one of Miguel Indurain's and one of Gianni Bugno's. These were the actual bikes used by those guys, not team replicas complete with torn tape, scratched paint and all.

First up: Lemond's Carbonframes. Carbonrframes was Craig Calfee's original brand. Interesting in that is had Chorus derailleurs and Record everywhere else. It also had Scott Drop-In bars and dt shifters. This bike cost $5000 and the 54cm bike's actual weight: 19.75 pounds.

Next: Lemond Ti 3/2.5. This was built by "Southeast Associated Machine" in Ooltewah, TN (Litespeed was in TN and Lynskey is in TN right?). This was a full Record 59.5 bike (both bikes had a 57.5cm top tube) complete with Ergopower. Interesting touches were the horizontal stays (because Greg wanted 'em). This bike cost $4675 and weighed in at 21.4lbs.

Big Miguel Indurain's (my favorite pro all time) Pinarello: This one was built by Fausto Pinarello himself (but I heard Big Mig later preferred Dario Pegoretti's work??). Anyway, it is a lugged Oria ML34 frame with full Record Ergo. It had some interesting details like extended seat and headtube lugs, chrome stays and forks. This frame was sized as a 58 but looks like it fit more like a 60 (the extended seat and head tubes have the effect of looking like the top tube was just lowered). That fit makes sense since Mig and I are both the same size and I ride a 60-62. Anyway, this bike weighed 22.5lbs

Gianni Bugno's Bianchi. This was the most "conventional" of all the bikes tested. It was lugged Oria KK 4130. with a full Dura Ace 7400 STI. This $2500 58cm bike weighed 23.25lbs.

None of these were light by modern standards -or even by 1992 standards. All three pros seemed to eschew lightweight in favor of what they were confident and comfortable riding several hours a day.

I don't think these pros want to be called "weenies" in any way!
Dang!, those pro bike prices sound crazy cheap compared to today's off the shelf bikes that's sold to us mortal bikers....what the heck happened to cycling? And I thought the money spent on skiing equipment all these years was crazy!

Back then you could buy a pro quality bike with the money you made at a summer job. $2000 was enough to get your dream bike with all top of the top level and boutique dream parts. $1500 would get you a Dura Ace or Record equipped bike. $1000 got you a very capable 600 (ie Ultegra) or Chorus bike. I remember spending the astronomical sum of $250 for a set of race only wheels (Bullseye hubs, Mavic Gel 280s) including freewheeel (Regina), and Conti tubs.

Had a chance to weigh this bike on a pro scale a few days ago and it came in at 21.18 lbs. And now I'm stricken with the desire to shave .19 lbs off of her. I think the answer lies in a lighter seatpost...
