Tandem Tom

As we get ready for a European cycle tour I would like to ride without using bike jerseys. So the search is on for affordable casual looking shirts that have wicking material. I like a shirt that buttons down the whole way so golf type shirts won't fit the bill.
Suggestions?

I'm not sure about button down. I have Minus 33 170 gm Merino Wool t-shirts for my setup. I would have preferred the IceBreaker 200 gm for the durability, but they were out of my price range. The Minus 33 were a good compromise between durable and affordable. They are plain and loose fitting so they are casual enough for everyday yet could pass for a dress shirt with the right pair of pants.

I have no clue how well they wick, but I have several Ex Officio shirts for travel. But I bought them because they dry quickly after I wash them in the sink and the particular ones I got had a zipper closure on a passport sized pocket.

It is my experience that when I bike in a solid color shirt, it is very easy to see if I am sweating because the color is different when damp. But a shirt with a pattern is less likely to show if you are damp.

I usually bring one or two high visibility jerseys when I travel, mainly for the safety of the high vis color.

I like the plaid at ACA but I don't really want to spend $90 for a shirt.

Check Bass Pro and Cabelas also. I don't know if they have the shirts in high viz in the style you want.

I have several synthetic t-shirts that I got at Ace Hardware of all places. They were selling them for $4 each, and they've actually worked better than the $25 under armor synthetic I used to use. It may have a been a one-time deal, but its worth checking out.

Attractive, wicking, affordable: pick two. I shop regularly at Cabelas--actually, I eat lunch there every day that I teach--and you just might find all three qualities in their bargain room if you are diligent.

Tom, I have a couple of D.A.C. Performance T-Shirts that work well, but there aren't any buttons. I can't remember where they came from.

If you don't mind the lack of aerodynamics, I'm fond of REI Sahara shirts. I use them all the time for desert hiking and backpacking. They look pretty much like a normal shirt. They are pretty easy to rinse out at night and dry fast.

Wool shirts of any sort will wick well and they are still the most stink resistant type of fabric.

I have 100% white linen shirts that I use when travelling for business in tropical latitudes. Protects from the sun, breathes, and dries very quickly.

Wore one last summer when hiking in the sun. (in Europe)

Plan to wear again this summer on EV6.

Linen shirts make a reasonable casual dress when dining out. They are light, do not absorb moisture and do not require ironing.

It doesn't have your buttons, but I've grown to love Carhartt Force High Visibility T-shirts. It's 100% polyester, available with short and long sleeves, less than $20, and comes in bright orange or lime. They're so comfortable that I often wear them off the bike. The best part for me is that drivers can see me a mile away when I'm wearing the orange.

My Base Layer was a wicking poly Mesh Singlet , and I had it modified ti hold my Money-belt in a sleeve tunnel across the lower back

that is where my Passport, Bank card and Return ticket stayed , + cash reserves ..
daily spending money was all that was available for pickpockets.

Shirt ?, try the Back packing shops.. North Face Tekwear is a wicking treated synthetic.

ExOfficio is a great place to start (they have a lot of great travel/adventure shirts with a ton of technology you would find useful cycling) and if you are dealing with hotter temps try the Mountain Hardwear Cool Q. Zero shirts (they make them in a button down which was great at my old job when the lights were baking)

if you live near a Dunham's they sell these cheap nylon button downs. i have not bought one yet, but i've bought the same brand of zip-off pants. i promise, they are cheap!

Uk brand Rohan have been making performance office/travel clothing for decades. Well made and durable but not cheap.

So being a bit on the frugal side I must say I was excited when my wife found a shirt that meets my ideals! She picked it up at a consignment shop for $2.00!! Now I am hoping for another score!!!!!
