Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM brifters - disintegrate?

Well, it's been awhile since I've been on here, but this is a new one on me.....anyone have issues with SRAM shifters seemingly starting to disintegrate on the inside? It's hard to tell if it's part of the rubber of the hood, or the shifter itself (the residue is pretty soft, so I'm thinking part of the rubber), but everything is all gummed/jammed up on the internals of the shifter. It's the shifter for the rear derailleur - the front shifter is fine. And here I thought I was just going to have a simple cable change. Dammit.

I'm thinking I may go back to Shimano....never had this issue with them in over 15 years.

Dumb question, but what are you using as a lubricant or cleaner on the bike? Any degreasers that might have come in contact with the internals?

Heh.....yeah, I do sweat a bit on occasion . I think I'm gonna bring it to a shop tomorrow and see if they can do anything.....it's been awhile, and I forget if the SRAM crap is repairable.

SRAM is repairable depending on the issue, but it sound like something that should be covered via warranty if it's effed up. Yeah, just bring it to a shop.

is the residue white? the cable housings that come stock with sram shifters have some teflon coating that comes apart and can gum up the works. my suggestion would be to never use the sram housing and just run jagwire from day 1.

Nah, it was black...I think it was the hoods. Either way, brake cleaner FTW....sprayed the hell out of it, and then re-lubed it. Replaced w/ Dura Ace cables, and ordered a new set of hoods.
