Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hope you're kidding.

Bakersfield is a desert with average daily highs in the 90s from June through September. AVERAGE.

Really the entire San Joaquin valley is full of dusty, smogy, crappy tweeker towns. There are some nice bits on the eastern end approaching the Sierra foothills, but in the valley not really. Once you get north of Sacramento there are also decent bits. Chico is a cool town.

Compared to most of the central US it's probably pretty mid tbh, but for California, it's crap.

EDIT: I should add that Bakersfield has some redeeming qualities. It's a big enough town so that there are plenty of well taken care of parts. It is also somewhat close to Kern river area and some serious river action and big mountains, Sherman's Pass road goes to 9,000' and you can see Mt. Whitney summit from the road. That is not that far from Bakersfield.

But that's relative to the rest of the valley, Bakersfield still sucks.

The white spot on the top left of the hill is an old quartz quarry. It's 7500 feet at the top. My ex had a 23 year old cat and when the cat died, we had her cremated and we rode our mountain bikes up there and sprinkled her ashes on the quartz. 2 weeks ago some people from my club rode through and one of the women told me she said hi to the cat as she looked up there.

Maybe get some studded tires for the CX bike and ride on bike paths once they are covered with snow. Gets you used to sliding around but you still have some control.

A bunch of us are riding into Philly today, as one of the guys is running the Philly marathon. We hope to surprise him with a cheering section at the 20 mile mark in Manayunk.

I offered to wear a devil costume and try to run alongside him yelling “Allez! Allez!!” but this was vetoed by the group.

Condors would come into Pine Mountain and idiots would feed them. I saw one walking near the trail when I was riding up Mt Pinos. He was not fearful of humans.
