It's a day or more late, but the ol' commutocruiser was an important modal link in some very long journeys. On Sunday, I had an early afternoon flight, but I wanted to lead my weekly group. So I tossed everything I needed for several days of meetings on the bike (including retrofitting a pair of rack hooks on the carryon), rode to the park, and led my weekly ride to a great breakfast. I then parked the bike at the downtown co-op with a big "do not sell, strip, or work trade" tag on it, walked to light rail, and flew across the country. On the return trip I did the light rail & stroll from the airport back to the co-op, changed into my grubbies, and worked a very busy shift helping with tires, gears, and a bunch of other stuff. And after all that and 20+ hours of wakefulness, rode home uphill with the carryon and other stuff. And still had to do chores when I got home. Wasn't really fully awake the day after, hence the delay in posting this.

Here's the setup upon arrival at home at the end of the 4000+ mile multimodal journey:

Fitted the Fitz with fenders and wider tires for the anticipated spring rainy season and took it for a shakedown ride today. The graffiti seems to be making a comment about my riding style:

I’ve been tending my wife from some minor surgery this week and squeezing in a 3-day work week so I had to drag myself out today but as usual it was worth it. Ride With GPS data tells me I haven’t ridden the Ashokan Reservoir loop since a date in early July with @noglider.

it’s always beautiful, one of the most scenic routes hereabouts that doesn’t involve climbing a mountain.


New water bottles from Analog Cycles in Vermont. I’ve wanted one of these for a while.


The clockwise route is 20 miles of quiet roads hugging the Reservoir followed by 10 miles of rail trail.


Our warm spell ends today. But it will be back!

Rode the Pegoretti today, 32 miles or so.
Feels funny to be back on 25mm tires pumped up to 100 Psi after a week on softer fatties.

@ascherer, how is she feeling now? I'm glad you got out. I don't take many recreational rides, either, but I've been stepping up my commuting, and I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity. And today, Carol and I rode together to rehearsal along the Hudson River Greenway in Manhattan. Beautiful day and scenery, but boy, was it crowded with cyclists and pedestrians. 10 miles round trip. Carol is out of practice, so it was a big trip for her. I'm proud of her. She's so out of practice that mounting and dismounting were a challenge. She mentioned the idea of replacing her bike for one with a lower top tube. She might get by with a little skill rebuilding.

there were some biwa, loquat, trees.
Harvest will be late May to middle of June, 2~3 months later.
They are still green but will turn to light orange.

Got to 70 degrees here Saturday and this was my second ride this week. Retention pond at far end off my travel then back to my parking lot and my 20 year old Mustang. Mustang has been to most of US. I cant do that anymore.

First ride for March. Was stuck working downtown all of last week and missed some prime riding days. Anyhoo, did 30 miles up north.

Cut through Evanston on the way home. Stopped by the Gross Point lighthouse. Got to go up in it as a kid because my uncle lived nearby and knew the keeper.



Next door is an odd “cottage” with a green house.



Took advantage of the expansive glass on the Ryan Athletic Center for a selfie.

Managed to successfully dodge rain showers over 2 leisurely rides over both days of the weekend, and as we are starting to see more sunshine the chrome rich bikes are coming out of hibernation. First ride of the year on the Botty.

Outside the ruin of St Dunstans in the east church. First built about 1100, rebuilt again in mid 1300s, was badly damaged in great fire of London in 1666, patched up again with a new steeple by Christopher Wren,, famous for St Paul's cathedral. Badly damaged again by bombing in WW2, but was not rebuilt again, and after a number of years the local council decided instead to turn the ruin into a public garden.

I thought these were maybe lyrics from a song, but my googling doesn't bring up anything.

Coming back thro Chinatown, always gòod for a dose of color...

And last stop of the day at.Brompton cemetery, Chelsea football.club is to the left.

Today's jaunt was the first of the year on the 753 Merckx, pausing at some of the early blossoming cherry varieties.

darkmoon my friends who live in nearby Kennington in London have a mature Loquat tree in their garden. They often get some local Korean people come over asking for any spare fruit, which they always get as theres always loads, I think they make a chutney with it.

Todays graffiti was rather abstract....

And before heading home to watch some thrilling FA Cup football action, i stopped off for a pic at the temporary Berkeley Square T-Rex, because you don't get to do that often, and its got vintage pedigree.

Spaghetti Legs 

Well that is weird botty kayer as I rode my 753 Merckx too today! Wasn’t thinking about it before starting but with my only real green bike (Heron) hiding out in Portland this one is the closest I have and I also wore a jersey I bought in Dingle, Ireland, although it doesn’t have any green in it. This bike until recently didn’t have a huge number of miles on it because it was equipped with a C Record group that was decidely not hill friendly but now equipped with a Super Record group that plays OK with a compact crankset. Pretty windy today and pretty much howling at the start as I rode into the Rockfish Gap which funneled all of it seemingly right into my face. I did get some payback with a little stretch of tailwind later. Only 29 miles but 2900 feet of climbing had me cooked up pretty well by the end.


One of my favorite spots descending from Afton, VA. Pretty stiff wind here; note the rock I had to put by the front wheel to keep the bike from blowing over.

Blue Ridge mountains. The peak to the left is Humpback Rocks, a lot of the Virginia tourist brochures have photos from that spot.

Another "interesting" ride today. Morning weather lady said the high winds we've been having (up to 70 mph) would end around 11. I went out around 1:30 and yeah, wrong again. Wind speeds up to 29 mph while I was out. Sure clear and sunny though with the temps thinking about hitting 50 degrees. I've been waiting awhile to take out the C40 with the Bora Ultra wheels so took that today. Couldn't really judge them though as the wind was either killing me or pushing me most of the ride. I think the knee is maybe getting a little better but I'm still not turning a decent cadence.

I rode out to the harbor today. I had to stop at Channel Islands National Park center when I saw the Coreopsis and Lupine blooming . Nice day with plenty of sun and only a mild wind.

I have a couple of my bikes set up with 25mm tires . I normally run 95psi and they roll nicely on the right roads. I’m not a wide , soft tire fan . I even run 95 psi in my 28mm tires . Joe
