During my frame building days, I tried to take a month off each season to do a sporting ride around the Pacific North West. Here are some photos from a most excellent ride. My first wife Virginia and I rode around 100 miles a day for 3 weeks, in the mountains of Oregon and northern California. Jim Merz

Beautiful photos.
Inspiring epic ride.
It makes me wonder how much the roads and area of your route have changed in the last 50 years.

Absolutely beautiful photography. Definitely not taken with the Instamatic 110 of the day. 100 mile days with that gear in that terrain must have been some workout. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I'm curious, what sort of gearing where you running in '74 to climb those mountains? I didn't know any better on my first two tours in the early 80s and ran 2 x 5 on one tour and 2 x 6 on the other both with "alpine" gearing (52/42 rings and 14-28 freewheels).

I took these photos with my Topcon Super D with 35mm, 58mm, and 135mm lenses. Kodachrome slide film. Both of us were strong riders, ah, to be young!
I see from the photos that both bikes have Campagnolo triple cranks with 36 tooth inner ring, I assume the other 2 were 52t. and 42t. I don't think we used anything lower than a 25t freewheel. Gran Turismo rear derailleurs! The bike Virginia is riding was Merz # 2 I think. That down tube decal was only used a few times. The color of her frame inspired the Specialized Bicycle "Merz" Sequoia tribute limited edition bike, designed by the very talented Erik Nohlin. Story here:

James Mason has some great bike photos on this link: https://pbase.com/zidar/root&page=3
