Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Highest heart rate you've seen on bike?

Mine was 178 and I thought I was going to blow it out of my nose.

I am 39. Does this mean I have a huge manly heart or the heart of an old man?

Can't say anything about your max heartrate, its so dependent on the person and genetics. It does tend to get lower with age (afaik). I've hit 206 and I'm 20.

Saddle-to-stem drop, max heart rate, time trial position, penises... it's how you use it that counts.

Listen, urbanknight - I don't want to hear any of that. I want to know if my measly max heart rate is a limiter on my chances of getting to the Tour. I am 39, I need to make decisions fast.

Isn't there some grand tour rule, like a min % of riders over a certain age, that makes it easier for old folks like you to get in?

That may be, but there could be old BF bastards with Max HR's of 690. You gotta plan, man.

In the words of Jeff Foxworthy: It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean... but it takes a long time to get to England in a row boat.

Come out here and beat this guy in a masters race and then you might have a slim chance.

Of course, I'm just jealous because I'm 10 years your junior and I rarely see a number above 178.

Reprogramming pacemakers isn't allowed under UCI rules,... is it?
