Stripping down a Montague

Hi, a call for help from anyone who has got the forks off and separated the two parts of the frame of any Montague pavement bike (their phrase, not mine). I've got a Montague Urban, which I love, and want to get it repainted. To do this I'd like to remove the front forks and separate the two parts of the frame. However I'm struggling with both of these things. Should the forks just drop out once the handlebar stem is removed or are they held in place by the headraces (which I can't get off)? And should the two parts of the frame separate easily (it seems the upright tube which forms the hinge gets wider towards the top preventing the rear section of the bike from coming off. Is this so)? Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks, Andy
