Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which cable cutter do you have? Most have a crimp spot on the handle side of the pivot.

See the notch and nub in the image of a Park tool below:

That is indeed the groovy tool, but, if you don't have one, a cheap crimper for electrical connectors will do the same thing.

I will check. I have the "Spin Doctor" cable cutter from Performance, which I imagine if I save it for 50 years may eventually be a collector's item.

This reminds me that I need to pick up another Park Tools triple hex. Over the weekend, I was making some caliper and FD adjustments while in the garage. When I took a brief break, the wife went on some errands. When she got back and parked the car in the driveway, I noticed my 4/5/6mm triple hex on the car's roof Yup, I had set both the 4/5/6 and 2/2.5/3 on the car and promptly forgotten about them. While the little guy didn't survive, I guess it's a minor miracle that one made the round trip to the grocery store.

Said the wife, "I was wondering about that rattling noise..."

Once drove all the way home from the store at 40 mph on Memorial Drive in Cambridge with a case of '82 Haut Medoc on top of the car. Of course, this was in 1984 or 85.

The diaper bag is the most frequent offender, these days. We do have rails and crossbars, though, so bigger items need to do a little more work to escape.

Got my crabon bike out today after a year stored inside a box in the basement. Apart from losing one stem screw and the thing being a bit moldy, it still works. Forgot to mark my saddle height, so I just winged it. Felt ok? I know this is supposed to be important, but I don't think that I am sensitive enough.

Went 2 mph faster on this one that on my steel bike just a week ago. Should I start a thread about it?

When working at a shop I grab some dikes and do two crimps at an angle.

At home I usually forgo cable ends an paint with nail polish or glue with crazy glue after cutting.

I'm riding lugged gaspipe today. Lack of cables surely must be making me very fast.

Any of you people ever ridden a road bike in Montreal? I'm heading up there tomorrow for the F1 race weekend, and I found a shop around the corner from the hotel that rents road bikes for reasonable prices. Looks like they have a pretty good bike path network, so I'm considering getting one for a couple days...
