FS: 1974 Fuji Newest

This is an interesting build to me anyway. I have seen some examples online but never knew anyone to do a similar concept. When I picked up this bike, it was in fair shape. It worked and functioned properly but it needed a bit of updating or maybe some sprucing . So, I decided to strip the paint completely and reveal the chrome underneath. It was a nice move. Chrome is in good shape luckily. No rust that I can tell .The other consideration was what kind of components should I add to it. So I went with Cinelli handlebars, stem and all Suntour Superbe components in excellent condition. The pedals are Superbe Pro but fit in nicely. Even added silver cable housing. This bike initially was set up with 27" wheels that they do come with but also come with Akai 700x rims with Suntour superbe hubs laced. Never been mounted. I didn't realize until after that those wont work on this frame due to reach of the brake. The longer Supebe 4700 will do the trick if one wanted to keep all components the same. The downside is I can't seem to source a seat post to complete the build so I leave it up to the new owner.

Lastly, I have a NOS Fuji branded quilted saddle and all new Fuji decals sourced from Velocals if one wishes to apply.
It's hard to gauge a good price on this since it's kinda not complete but one has options so to speak when it comes to two different wheel sets.
Size is 56cm

PRICE DROP: SOLD I'm definitely willing to work with somebody on price if it seems unreasonable. Take a look at pictures and feel free to ask any questions. Thanks

I know this sounds like a strange question -- but what do people think the frame & fork are worth on the open market? BECAUSE, in another topic, that I mentioned that one intended build for my Palo Alto, which I am becoming attached to, would be for an all-Suntour (or mostly, anyway) build... perhaps break my anti-Japanese bias. But I am seeing asking prices for individual components somewhat formidable, and I was thinking it might be logical to buy an entire bike, remove the components, and sell the frame.

Or maybe someone is seeing your For Sale and is thinking "nice frame, but I'd like to outfit it with the Dura-Ace stuff I have laying around".

This is a very respectful question. I'm guessing one dull answer might be whatever someone is willing to pay for it. However, Fuji Newest isn't that sought after unless you're a Japanese enthusiast. I've had an offer for $600 from a fellow but he didn't come through. (That's a whole other scenario). By and large for most in the BF world that I have seen, Japanese vintage frames seems to be lower priority unless Cheribum is in the mix.. The components seem to be the winner over italian makers but I have both and quite frankly don't see a huge difference. Regardless, as the ad states, I'm definitely willing to work with a price that we can agree upon.

Thanks for that well-thought-out response. I plan to watch the topic and see (A) maybe someone will grab this bike, meaning I waited too late, (B) I see more about the salability of the bare F&F.

I'm in uncharted waters here; only the 2nd time in my life I've bought an entire bike instead of parts at a time. This looks like a nice bike, both the frame and the components. For all I know, it's already well priced. I'm just watching costs closely as I decided to restore 5 bikes at once and the Palo Alto is right now just a bare F&F and I'll need every component... and I'm trying to be careful with the dollars.

A Fuji Newest is one of the more desirable Japanese vintage bikes. I have Fuji Finest which is one model "below" this and it is terrific bike.

Looks like several options for whoever ends up with this:

(A) Looks nice with the bare chrome
(B) Restore to original, I see Velocals has Fuji Newest (1972) decals
(C) Chromovelato

Well, it will be seen again. Despite the effort that hwheel72 put into the build, I'm harvesting the components for one of my projects and will re-sell the frame and fork. If it looks in person anything like the photos, someone will end up with a nice Fuji!

I’m curious if the fork is an Ishiwata like the one on my Campania. Would you mind posting a pic of the steerer when you list the frame for sale?

Let's see: I should be able to, excepting that I am a horrible digital camera user - one reason I was avoiding the buy-and-resell process. Of course, hwheel72 may already be intimately knowledgeable on the question. Otherwise, I'll take your request into account!

Anyone know more about the Newest? Frame tubing, etc.? Getting ready to re-sell 9spent some time this AM with Blue Magic on the chrome, looks better but not perfect. And I could not answer any questions about it if I was asked.

What do you want to see? Just got the headset out (I finally broke down and got some cheap headset tools).

I'm just curious about the markings/stampings, and if they are similar to what I posted her about the fork on my Campania here: https://www.bikeforums.net/20809294-post21.html

Thank you!

"Quick update on the Campania for reference. Here is the stamp on the fork steerer tube, marked “4E,” with what looks like an “O” and a tiny “s”."
Thank you!
Not sure I can get a close enough photo, but YES, similar markings: the O and S, and below that, a 4 and an L. Crown looks very similar, maybe an exact match.

Hope that helps!

tiger1964 The decals I provided should tell you what tubing it is. I do know it's double butted but not sure what Fuji called it.

Doh! OK, just opened my umpteenth delicate package of decals in the past week or so; I had been planning on leaving it sealed. Found a very nice looking round decal with a wreath depicted -- within it it says "FUJI Double Butted Chrome Molybdenum steel tubing". 4130 perhaps?

Not that I've been polishing, just waiting for a sunny day so I can get a good photo of just the frame & fork. I also plan to x-ref yours, they are pretty good.

One decal looks like it's sized to be an overlay for the faded head badge. Nice touch!

Ishiwata was often used as Fuji's tubing.

Thanks, and I've heard that name before... likely here. However, unless I am reasonably sure, I better not advertise it that way.

Wait a minute -- see posts 14 and 18; is that evidence?

I say Ishiwata based on comments heard over the years. Below is a good post from an interesting thread that is often off topic (Valite):

According to T-Mar's advice, this is an "off the rack" Ishiwata fork, so it does not necessarily mean that the tubing is also Ishiwata. In my Campania thread, though, we seemed to settle on the notion that the 27.0mm seat post on my Campania is *likely* indicative of Ishiwata 024 tubing. I can't confirm that definitively, but for my purposes, this was plenty of certainty. Do you happen to know the seat post size for this Newest?
