Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sometimes. The data often are flawed or not reliable. If I really want something valid I may order a medical monitor (like a cardiac event monitor to capture an intermittent arrhythmia).

Some of the newer monitors actually report blood pressure but I don’t believe this is always accurate.

What kills me is when a patient shows up gaining weight and worse blood pressure/diabetes/cholesterol, and I ask them about increasing their activity, they proudly show me their wearable device and brag how they get 10000 steps daily or complete their circles or whatever. Clearly it’s not enough in these cases, or maybe too much fuel in their bodies.

I am riding today. I like an early start, but with this “second winter” my friends insist on an 11AM start to allow temps to warm above freezing.

I suggested they HTFU and leave earlier, but no one took my side.

So you're waiting for them? I get a little of that here. Club rides (for the main club) always start at 8:00. Some have argued for later starts in "winter" but it's never happened in the 35 years I've been with them.
Tuesday rides are moved to 9:00 and sometimes it's been argued to go later than that. Seems kinda silly.

Yes waiting. I enjoy the company and camaraderie on a ride, and today’s schedule is flexible enough that I am willing to compromise.

If they're actually walking that much it's not bad. And the accuracy of the devices will surely improve in the future.

I listened to a podcast about this last night. The problem with that traditional system, of course, is that an "accurate" reading every few months (and obviously a nurse testing your BP right after you walk into the exam room isn't very representative) isn't that great.

I watch "My 600 Pound Life" sometimes. People go to the doctor to try and get gastric sleeve surgery, ( the show pays for it) and the doc tells them they have to lose weight and get their stamina up before he will consider it. He gives them a strict diet to follow and exercises to do.

Some follow the advice and in a few months get the surgery. Some fail, insisting the diet is "too restrictive" or they say they know their own body better than the doctor. They may reward themselves with a "cheat day" which becomes a lot of cheat days.

It's a study of denial. Some of the really sick ones get put in the hospital when they are on the edge. They get the diet and weight just starts coming off. Some will order pizza from their hospital room or their enablers will bring them bags of fast food. It's crazy.

In the winter, our rides start at 10:00, and are categorized as "show and go". With the ever-changing weather here, we can't really plan out too far ahead. We'll generally aim for 50-60 mile type deals and are generally done by 2:00 or so. Of course, there is also the Brevet side of the club, and they hold a 200k a month to satisfy the K-Hounds.

No real winter here in the lowlands. Our club was affected quite a bit by the C19 shutdown. Lots of people never came back and turnout is smaller. If it's wet-ish or chilly hardly anyone comes out.
Supposed to be a light rain tomorrow so I doubt anyone will show up.

I remember years ago, a show about a guy who was over 1000 lbs. Of course he was damn near immobile. His family came over and cooked for him. Breakfast was like a pound of bacon and a dozen eggs and a box of sticky buns. I found that a bit disturbing, that his own family were complicit in killing him.

Lovely morning out on the new MTB, in and out of a fog bank.

The new bike infatuation remains strong. Unless I'm racing, I don't see a ton of appeal in being out on the road bike right now. I can train indoors. When I head outside, I just wanna ride my new MTB. It's soooo sick.

It's one of the aspects of the show that amazes me. Each show is a one year study of one individual. These people are at least 600 pounds, some quite a bit more than that. Many are nearly bedridden or actually bedridden. They manipulate those around them for everything, including enormous portions. Sometimes the enabler wants to control the other person. At least twice the husbands have left the wives when they started losing weight. Yes, some of them are married.
