Three tubes?
I was tired this AM (from staying up to watch the 2 pres speeches), but still determined to commute in....When I went to inflate my rear tire, the presta valve cap popped right out - and that tube was toast. Still, I was up early enough...grabbed a tube off the shelf, got it on easily, and......it had a leak. Opened a 3rd out of the box, put it on......and the stem was too short for the aero rims....but still useable...then the damn cap broke off.
After 3 tries, I got in the damn car and drove.

Presta valves are so simple in design, you would think them fail-proof. However, I have also found them to be more fragile and testy than Schrader valves. Maybe your rims don't allow for Shrader valves, but if they do, consider the switch to Schraders.

This may have saved you from greater calamity — Be thankful
As far as a backup bike, I have two other bikes I could have used - my Giant CF road bike, or my aluminum/carbon double....but as it's getting dark very early, I like using the one with all the lights instead of just having a helmet light and a blinkie on the back of the helmet/jersey. (My commuter has 4 rear blinkers, two front, and a Hi-Po LED setup).
And....it's the only bike that has fenders.
I don't use a backup SS bike, because the commute is a hilly 21 miles each way.
After the 3rd tube went bad, I was done. I picked up 6 on sale on the way home, though.

here is a tip that might save the "pulled the valve out of the tube" problem.
Use the valve nut on the inside of the rim. That way you should never be able to pull the stem out of the tube. Can be a great thing on a commuter bike.
