Hey there, I'm nick, and I'm looking into biking. My brother is big in to cycling, and I have a couple friends who want me to start cycling with them. Also the fact that I'm around bikes and bike stuff all day because i work at the Trek warehouse in NJ, makes me to take advantage of my discount, (its ok you can be jealous ). Right now im looking into either at the Trek Hybrid 7300 or the FX 7.3, but I dunno what the difference is. Also, im not sure what size I need either, I'm about 5'8, but I dunno what size frame would fit me. I really excited to start biking, and really cant wait to get this bike

I would find a LBS (local bike store) that sells Treks and try out the 2 bikes. Just tell them you are interested in buying them, don't let them know about your discount through your company. The FX is more of a high performance road style hybrid, where the 7300 is more of a comfy cruiser. I personally really like the FX series, but own an older 7100. As far as size goes, same thing, go to a LBS and see what they say and you think, but I would start with a 17.5 or 20.

I just picked up an FX 7.3 yesterday so haven't ridden it properly yet but for me I really enjoy how light and frisky it feels. I also own a mountain bike that's heavier and with front suspension so I could really feel the contrast. The FX is a harder ride but also more responsive. It seems to be a really fun bike and I can't wait to ride it more.

I did look at the 7100 and 7300 but wasn't too fond of the suspensions they offered. In my case the price between the 7300 and FX was too small to not go for the FX.

I say go test ride both of the bikes you are thinking about and see how they feel. The most important thing is feeling good and enjoying the bike.

+1 on the test rides; that's the only way to know for sure. You should also consider what sort of riding your going to do - streets and paved surfaces only, or the occasional gravel/crushed limestone trail?

BTW I for one am very jealous of your Trek discount.

Define first what you want your bike to do, and what you want to do on the bike.

If you want to lolly gag around town, that is one thing. If you want to get out of town and pound a few miles out, that is another.

You may be better served on one bike over the other.

First decide your purpose for riding. This bike will follow. Ask around, define then ride.

Oh, you may need more than one bike though. Different rides need different bikes. Hehe

Yeah, i'm planning on making some time to get over to the bike shop where I have to get it assembled (they make us get it assembled there) and trying out some bikes. Thank you guys very much for the advice. I was going to get a bike today, but then i thought that would be a bit foolish lol. I'll keep ya updated

The FX is a much better bike than the 7000 series, unless you really NEED the suspension. Also, go for the highest level you can afford - as componentry will be improved.

I have an FX 7.2 and was pretty much set on it from day one but I did look at the 7000 series. I don't think the FX is better than the 7000. It really comes down to what you are looking for. The FX is faster and more of a forward lean. The 7000 has a more upright position which some people find more comfortable and has a suspension to give a more cushy ride. I did not like the feel of the 7000 but I used to ride a road style bike.

I stand corrected! I agree - your way of saying it is really more of what I mean.

I came off a road bike, ending up on a Crosstrail (like a 7300) due to physical issues.

I was tempted to go with a 7200 because of a left knee injury which limits my range of motion. The upright position seemed to make it easier on my knee, but I really liked the slight forward lean of the 7.2 FX.

Yeah I personally would prefer to be more upright. I road my brother's extra road bike (A motobecane?) and i found it to be rather uncomfortable to be leaning more forward. I just gotta get to the bike shop some time. I was going to go today, but I didnt end up waking up til 2 and have work (at my other job) at 4. Maybe tomorrow

Spend as much time on each style you are considering as possible. The dealer I went to was good that way. I spent at least 15 minutes on each one before I decided on the 7.2 FX. Then when my bike came in I rode mine for 20 minutes just to make sure I was happy.

So I finally decided on a Black 7.3 FX 17.5. I submitted the paperwork earlier today, and I'm paying for it and hopefully bringing it home tomorrow, I'll be sure to throw up some pics once I get it

congrats! I just got that exact same bike, about a week ago. swapped out the stock seat and grips for comfier ones. have put about 110K on it since then, and I am loving it.

yeah i havent rode it much yet, and i already have a list of other goodies that I need to get. Like a light of sorts, a helmet, the bonteringer flat-pack, and one of the fancy trip computers. Good thing i get a discount ahaha
