Picked up this Specialized Hard Rock "Comp" last weekend for $15, hehe. I thought the kid said $50
so I moved on, I got about ten feet at and he said ten? I was like wait a minute, did you say $15, and he said yeah. I didn't hold him to the ten bucks, They looked like they needed it.

So....What is the heirarchy of the Specialized bikes? I never could seem to find out what the levels were? Hard Rock, Rockhopper, Srumpjumper?? None of thm sound any higher than the other, if you look at from that angle, lol.

This one is Suntour XCE equipped so not low end, but not the top either, right? It rides perfectly, even the thumbshifter indexing hits the gears like it was just at the shop. No slop in the headset either.,,,,BD

Not too shabby for $15 eh? It fits me too, but I don't know if I'll keep it yet.

Something a little bit different:

It's Swiss

It's lugged steel

It's a Mondia Everest!

Shimano STX, Mavic rims, Reynolds 501 Magnum tubing.

Got myself a 1997 (?) Specialized Rockhopper tonight. Same question as bikedued: hierarchy anyone?

Paid 50 euros. Have a lot of work todo on it. I love the colour and frame geometry already (rides great) but darn.. the paint is chipped everywhere.

upon arrival

inspection!

last shot tonight.

group is mix of Shimano Acera-X, Alivio, STX, Dia-Compe and specialized.

Specialized mountain bike hierarchy:
Stumpjumper was top of the line
Rockhopper was middle
Hard Rock was lower end
Then there was a Street Rock for a little bit, I think in the early 90s?

Please correct me if my memory fails.

Not the greatest pics, but this is a Bridgestone "Wildwest." I have no idea what year it's from as I've had no luck whatsoever on finding information on this bike. Apparently they were only available in Japan.

It's too small for me, so I put it up on CL recently for $60 but didn't have any takers.

I've actually seen that page before, but, unfortunately, can't read Japanese.

I guess it does tell me it's from the mid-90s, but I would have guessed that anyway.

Gotta love those 80's paint jobs. Even the mid to low end bikes you can score for peanuts now have those awesome colors and graphics. Pink, aqua, purple, oh yea!

I just finished this in the wee hours of the night last night. Picked it up for $60 and brought it up to date with a SS conversion and rear wheel re-dish.

Nice bike - thanks for the date. I just found almost the exact same bike (mine doesn't have color-matched handlebars) at a thrift store. That is my next project after my homebrew xtra cycle is made. I'm using a 1996 Skykomish for that build.

I'm feelin' that yellow Rockhopper! I've been riding rigid SS on the trails for oh....6 years maybe? Try it if you haven't. It's fun I run 32x17, what are you using?

Here's a picture of my current SS ride, a 93 Dean Colonel:

And me riding it

Yeah I'd really like a report on that brake, I've never seen anything like it before.

It's a neat brake. At first I thought it was a roller cam brake. The bike doesn't look ridden, nice find.

I found it on eBay:

https://cgi.ebay.com/New-Tektro-Canti...4.c0.m14.l1262

It works just fine! Wierd, but fine. This is how the bike looked like when I first got it. You know the routine: rust, scrapes, dings, dents and spider webs.

I stripped it down and started in on the frame with touch up and polishing.

Everything was replaced except the wheels, headset and brakes. Of course, for the SS conversion I had to re-dish and true the hell out of the rear wheel.

By far my favorite old school/new school build: my brother's Rock Lobster, one of the originals. His current race bike is a new Rock Lobster. Incredible frames.

Paul used to weld our BMX bikes back in the 80's and 90's.

It's basically just a little story about his life with the bike. To summarize, one day he was reading a magazine on the train when he saw the bike and was interested in its frame and said "oh, this is what bikes have become, huh?" He fell in love with it and went to the bike shop. He didn't see the exact one so he ordered it. They asked him whether he wanted it equipped with shimano or suntour and he chose suntour and so on...This was the bike that rekindled his interest in cycling (after a six year break).

The end is pretty funny. He concludes by saying how one winter day he took it out and as he reached the top of a 600 meter climb he said "mou konna omoi jitensha wa iyada" which means something like "I'm sick of this heavy bike," and so he "retired" it. (i searched around the site and it looks like he got a trek 8000 next: aluminum frame!)

If you look on this page you can see all the great bikes he has owned: https://www3.coara.or.jp/~norihiko/Bicycle.html

I've got that exact same bike at home.

Did you use hollow QR type axles? The front looks like Ringle skewer. That's a really great looking conversion.

inspiring yellow Rockhopper! Especially because I am working on a red version right now:

questions:
- do you have more pics? (on flickr e.g.)
- did the polishing work out fine? and machine of manual?
- did you repair paint chips? My rockhopper suffers a lot of scraped of paint spots

got to love those single bright colours!

I've got one of those too. It's a 1986 that I bought on ebay. It was really trashed. The frame/fork are sitting in my garage waiting to be built or sold. I bought the yellow bike about a year after the red one. Looks like old Rockhoppers never die.
