Brake pad recommendation?

I need to replace my brake pads, they have been on since mid 80's. I currently have Weinmann Brev 6 dot pads. Just wondering if I should try and replace with the same thing or if there is something else better. I found an online store selling what is described as Weinmann style 7 dot pads, set of 4 is only $9.95 with free shipping. Thanks for your comments.

^^^^^what he said. It's all we have on our bikes. FWIW, the salmon compound is my favorite-even in dry conditions.

I use their mountain salmons on my touring/commuter bike cantis. Thanks for reminding me that I need to order some for the summer.

I'll 3rd this. We use the Salmon on my son's bike with cantis, literally ordered some dual compound for my roadie today.

I've used the Kool Stop Salmon pads for years, even in the rain, in fact I thought they stopped better in the rain than other brands rain pads. I use only the Suntour OEM Superbe pad, these work fantastic and last forever: Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977. Those Superbe pads will work in a lot of different brake holders, but you need to look up yours in particular to make sure. The Dot ones you've used do not have as much stopping, or should I say, gripping surface, as some of the others do, you want virtually a solid piece of rubber or solid, if you have Weinmann brakes and the others won't fit then try the Weinmann X block brake, but check the fit first, but I "think" they should fit.

It seems Kool Stop is what most of you prefer. My question is which one is which one is going to fit and work the best on my 64 Supersport? I see different ones mentioned and I'm a little confused. My bike currently has Weinman Brev 6 dot pads. Hopefully someone can chime in and tell me which model to get.. I looked at the Mountain Salmons that were mentioned. They look interesting being long and narrow. I'm concerned about getting something that clearance won't be an issue. I appreciate all comments, thank you.

What calipers are you fitting them to?

For general "older" bikes the Continental is usually what will fit and clear without issue.

otherwise look here. Looks like 6 dot are an option.

Sounds like these will fit as it's your current size.

Actually, I did mention it in that post you quoted that I wrote, please reread it, I also said to contact Kool Stop and ask them to make sure those pads would work, I'm pretty sure they will, but I don't have a bike like yours and I cannot find which model of Weinmann Center pull brakes you have, which by the way is a nice bike by the way.

Kool Stop has both six-dot and seven-dot Weinmann style pads:

I also like Kool Stop and would recommend them, although just about anything should work better than 40-year-old fossilized pads.

My question is: Where do you buy them, especially if you are after something specific like 6-dot Weinmann style? The KS site lists all the variations, but I have not been able to find a source for most of them.

And BTW, anything with a threaded post would work on Weinmann centerpulls.

Another huge plus 1 for Kool Stop though some of the speciality stuff you might have to go through them. Old school Weimann brakes from the 60s and 70s. are no longer relevant in todays world, Stocking some basic pads for older bikes might be fine but unless they specialize in vintage bikes you probably won't find stuff like what you need however KS does make it.

For those looking for brake pads always make sure it has a Stop in the name like Kool Stop or SwissStop if it doesn't just move on. You ideally want a good stiff shoe paired with a quality pad and this is not the place to save money because good quality pads are usually not that much more expensive and even if so probably won't top out over 30-40 bucks at most and that is high. Plus the good quality pads and shoes will improve a brakes performance quite a bit for little money and little effort. I have tried some cheaper pads and there was a noticeable difference even on a top end caliper with decent cables and housing and good levers. I saved like $8 but got a huge performance loss worth way over that $8.

Kool Stop Weinmann X block brake pads are better than the Kool Stop Weinmann 4, 5 or 6 dot kind of pads.
