Calling an organized bike ride event a "race" just adds to the confusion.
charity ride, tour, event or some other term is more appropriate.

The mere fact that he called it a “noncompetitive race” shows he is a neophyte in this area, so you already know the answer. He should have stated it was a fun ride/charity ride with numbers. Newbies and people not familiar with the sport see numbers and think “race”. No sense beating someone who misspoke unless that is your thing.

THIS a dozen times over. Using "race" as a description of any organized cycling event causes a lot of confusion and can result in some terrible advice and misunderstandings.
