The rear derailleur is a Suntour XCD perhaps, I'm certain it is. I put that same set on a touring frame this spring.

Thanks. I ended up not making it... got a 1992 Trek 930 instead.

I finally found a Takara Team frameset on eBay for a reasonable price. I would have preferred a smaller frame but from what I've read the top tube is quite a bit shorted than the seat tube so I might be OK. Can't wait to build it up of vintage Japanese components.

Can anyone shed some light on this bike?
I can't make out what the word on the top tube says, but on the downtube is what looks like a Tange sticker. I just want an idea if it's worth me going to check this bike out (for sale semi-locally to me). I can't find anything online in regards to 80's takara catalogs.

My best guess is that it says "prestige", as I've seen a photo or 2 similar to it.. lugged, roughly early 80's and no DT shifter bosses.

I believe that is a Takara Prestige. I would not pay much for it especially in that condition.

It's a low asking price. I figured it was towards the lower end: nutted rear axle, steel chain rings, stem shifters, turkey levers. But the lugs and what looked like Tange sticker piqued my interests slightly. Do you know what the frame material on these were?

My early 80s Takaras all have hi-tensile tubes. And the seat tube sticker states that they are "Guaranteed Special". This bike is probably an 84 or so and may have better tubes, but I doubt it. My interest in Takara is only a sentimental one and I've greatly over paid for a couple of them. But this one I hope is very low priced.

dpicare26 In doing some googling this evening, I found a couple of sites that indicate that the Prestige was made with cro-mo tubes by Giant and the same bike was also sold as the Schwinn Traveler. Although I do not know that that information is correct. If T-mar was around I'd bet he would likely know.

I picked up this Takara Advantage for $5 at Goodwill to scavenge a few parts. It was way too small for me to ride, so I made it into a hybrid using stuff I had on hand. It was originally equipped with drop bars and stem shifters.

I appreciate the information!
the asking is only $25. Could probably snag it for less, but not sure what I'll do. I just bought another bike yesterday lol. (~91 Mongoose Crossway 850, early hybrid bike).

I had a Takara Touring bike that I purchased used in the mid-90s. I don't recall the model, but I seem to recall it ran a Suntour Mountech 18-speed drivetrain, it was a pretty decent bike with an unusually long cockpit. I also had a Raleigh Alyeska around that same time. I have never seen either of these bikes show up again in my travels, both were decent rides.
