Moving from Shimano 10-speed to 11-speed. Re-use crank and front derailleur
Hi all,
I am considering upgrading my bike from Shimano Ultegra 10-speed (6600 series?) to 11-speed 105/Ultegra combo.
Can I re-use the existing 10-speed front derailleur and crank? It's a double. This would primarily be to save money.
TIA

If you keep the same STI or shift lever for it you definitely can. But your two STI's might be noticeably not the same.
You can always try it with the new STI's for whatever you get. If it doesn't work, then fork out $30 or less for a new 105 from the 5800 series or any of the newer 11 speed 105, Ultegra or DuraAce that you can get. The 10 speed Tiagra 4700 FD worked with the 105 5800 STI's I put on a bike. But I think the pull ratio might be different for the 10 speed Ultegra and DuraAce or even the older Tiagra 4600.

FD-not really
The Shimano road shifters for 11 speed changed the pull ratio from prior version (both front & rear). 11 speed pulls more cable, and is intended to be matched with derailleurs designed for this amount of cable pull.
Notice the longer cable attachment arm.
With a double you could probably get it to work, by running the cable really loose in the low position, but the trim positions will not work as intended.

Ain't the crank spacing for 11 speed a bit different as well? Nope on the front derailleur, as I tried it and got crummy shifting. Oh, and get the 11 speed front D with the short arm, not the long fugly looking one.
My $0.02

I put an 11sp R7000 FD on a bike with an R7000 11sp crank and never gave a thought about the fact that it otherwise had 9sp 105 on it, including the front shifter. It works fine. No issues whatsoever. As long as it can pull enough cable you use the limit screws to set how far it goes.

In the OP's case, the presumably new 11 brifter would pull too much cable for the older FD. Running it with very low cable tension in the 'L' position would probably work, but 'trim' would be off.

I imagine if you use the 10-speed front STI lever, it'll work. Maybe.
